Geopolitical & Conflicts
Israel-Gaza Conflict:
Israeli strikes continue in Gaza, with reports of high casualties. Despite mounting international criticism and warnings of looming famine, Israel is pressing ahead with its military offensive. Aid is trickling into Gaza, but there are calls for large-scale, sustained distribution. The UK has suspended free trade talks with Israel and announced sanctions over West Bank settlers. France, the UK, and Canada have issued an ultimatum to Israel, warning of "concrete action" if the offensive and aid blockade continue.
Russia-Ukraine War:
The conflict continues with little progress in peace talks. New EU and UK sanctions have been imposed on Russia's "shadow fleet" of tankers illicitly transporting oil, acting "in concert" after a Trump-Putin call failed to secure a ceasefire promise. The Vatican has been suggested as a potential venue for talks, with Pope Leo renewing an offer to help.
Sudan Crisis:
Sudan is facing the largest humanitarian crisis ever recorded, with 12 million people displaced and over a quarter facing acute food shortages, including famine in parts of Darfur. The military has reportedly taken full control of the Greater Khartoum region.
