🌱 Home Hydroponics Gardening ~ Outdoor System Update (02/22/2018)
Hello my fellow gardening enthusiasts.
Progress has been made getting my front outdoor hydroponics system back up and running. Last week I re-dug out the hole for the 55 gallon reservoir, installed a new pump for the vertical garden section and moved the tomato and cucumber plants outside to get adjusted.
This week it was time to tackle the dutch bucket system on the right side of the setup and get those back in working order.
First things first, I cut the 1/4" feed lines, removed all five of the buckets and cleaned them out. I figured this was a good time to replace the O-ring gaskets on the return lines in each bucket since they spent a few months in dry, hot conditions.
The gaskets are placed around the male adapter coming through the side of the buckets, then the female adapter and drain "T" fittings are screwed back on to make a tight seal.
Inside the unit I cut and replaced the 1/4" feed lines to make sure they were new and flowing cleanly. After-all, I was putting in a new pump so might was well have fresh lines as well.
This was the first time I was able to take a picture inside the setup to to show how the main line, feed lines, and return lines are all connected together. This system was originally built before I joined Steemit so I never thought to take pictures of inside.
With the new 1/4" feed lines pulled through and all the dutch buckets sitting in their return line seats I connected up the new 300 gallon per hour pump using the same outlet with the 1/4" air supply node I used on the vertical garden pump I showed in my previous post. The two of them together is giving a very strong circulating current in the reservoir tank.
This photo is showing the completed main feed and return lines for both systems connected to the reservoir tank. This was just before I connected the last dutch bucket, I left that open while I tested the pump to make sure I could see the return water flow back to the tank. Once I knew it was all flowing properly, I installed the end bucket.
Next I replanted the tomato and cucumber plants into the dutch buckets and used vine clips to attach them to the supply lines hanging down. The cucumbers will grow across the trellis on the far right side.

The last thing on the list to do this weekend is to build the new wood box to cover the reservoir tank and move the bell pepper and herb plants out to the vertical garden rails.

Really cool! I think I am going to have to try the ponics version like you have. I just have to learn about the water additives, and how much to add and what not. I am pretty sure I have all the supplies laying around, so start up cost shouldn't be too much. Thanks for posting, I am learning a ton already.
Yeah there are lots of different water soluble nutrients available, it's a matter of finding what works for your system, conditions, and type of food you are growing. I will do a post on the dry blend I mix up for my systems in the future.
I don't know what it is about hydroponics that always fascinated me. It actually more like hypnotizes me. Maybe its being from the concrete jungle of NJYC metro. IDK. Either way I found your images meditative. I hope to one day have an indoor greenery, though I have a thumb of death.
Mind you, I am not saying indoor greens are a replacement to an outdoor garden. But I recognize a special atmosphere inside.
Really a sweet setup. I must admit, having fresh herbs, fruits and veggies has no match.
Check out some of my previous posts for indoor wall gardens using LED grow lights. I grow lettuce and herbs inside, they do much better this way instead of out in the heat.

Ahhhh. So relaxing. You know the Disney Swiss Family Robinson display. Yeah like that.
This is genius...Can something like this be done indoors for those who have long winters and want to grow some greens?I only sprout seeds for now.
Yes, I have an indoor system for lettuce and herbs.

Amazing I will check this out. Lettuce is my main food staple and it's not easy to find good quality in stores. This would solve my problem. Thanks!
wow dude, that is awesome. it seems like a crazy amount of work to grow regular vegetables but that is a very slick setup and very clean look built in like that. Are you just showing off mad hydro skills or do you have limited space, why do all that?
LOL - yeah we live in a townhouse with very small space outside so vertical gardens and hydroponics are the only way to do it to be able grow a practical amount of food.
I use some passive hydroponic containers outside that I like a lot but I am really impressed by that setup.
excellent post congratulations. I invite you to read my humble orchard of growing chives https://steemit.com/spanish/@gensequini/mis-cebollines-en-crecimiento-un-reto-en-evolucion-huerto-en-casa
Very cool - I had to Google translate it ;-)

Hi there, I hope you don't mind me contacting you, but as a show researcher for @pennsif's Alternative Lifestyle radio show I am always on the lookout for potential guests. (I don't think anyone has approached you already? If so, apologies.) If this is something you might be interested in doing, especially to highlight your use of hydroponics to grow food, I can give you more details about the show, if you haven't yet heard any of the past episodes. Show listeners would love to hear about the growing system. Thanks. :)
(You can contact me by reply here, or via the Discord DM.)
Keep up the good work, space stations will all need hydroponics!
your pistingan is amazing friend
This is really cool! As a gardener myself, I love seeing all the cool DYI things people are doing these days to make the most out of small spaces. Followed, keep up the good work!
Wah, work is the best my friend, @steempowergarden
