Trimming and Cleaning Garlic after Harvest

in #gardening7 years ago

Liz Crain of Leafhopper Farm demonstrates how she trims and cleans her Garlic after harvest. First she cures and dries them, then she cuts off the roots and upper stalks, and then she peels the outer layers of the skin off to make the Garlic Bulb more presentable.

DRYING & CURING
  • Drying and Curing with the Stalk and Roots still intact improves the flavor of the Garlic Bulbs. To keep them from getting wet during this process you can store them upside-down in buckets outside under cover.
TRIMMING THE ROOTS & STALK
  • To prepare the Garlic for market or home use, first cut the Roots off with scissors. Remove some of the outer layers of skin around the bulb with the palms of your hands. Cut the the Stalk about 6 inches from the Bulbs and use the new end of the Stalk to grab and peel the outer layers. The cuttings make great compost and can be used for starting a fire.
REPLANTING
  • Garlic is easy to grow because they are hardy and you can replant the Bulbs from the previous season allowing you to select the most successful plants as the starting point.
STIFF NECK GARLIC
  • Liz prefers the Stiff Neck Garlic because it is easy to pop off the Cloves, and you get more from each Bulb. Soft Neck Garlic has tiny cloves in the middle of the head which are difficult to harvest and utililize.

so much to learn about garlic :)

This is not the way that I do it, but I do like your method too. Great how to!

I like hardneck garlic as well. I grow a version that I collected from the wild here. It is white with a purple tinge. For a wild garlic it gets up to two inches in diameter, which is good!
