How NOT to kill your Centipede lawn .....

image.jpegThe easiest way to kill a Centipede lawn is FERTILIZING..

Can I fertilize or use weed and feed now (March) ?
This is probably one of the most asked questions every spring. The Answer is NO! It is never recommended to begin fertilizing before at least April 10th, even though you will see ads for weed/feed starting in March. Weed and Feed Products on Centipede are never recommended. To rid your lawn and gardens of weeds, use a pre-emergent (weed seed killer) NOW . Pre-emergents will not hurt your lawn or plants, it simply kills weed seed. Use a pre- emergent 3-4x a year to prevent backbreaking weed pulling in your beds and the unnecessary use of chemicals on your lawn.
Fertilizing to soon WILL surely damage or kill lawn areas, should we have another frost after you apply to your lawn. Centipede grows best when the temperatures are at least a consistent 80 degrees. That is usually late April or May.
Be patient and you won’t work as hard to enjoy your lawn.
Always buy fertilizer formulated for the grass your have, I.e. Bermuda, St. Augustine, Zoysia etc. Remember when purchasing grass fertilizer that Centipede is NOT like the other grasses. Centipede does not like high nitrogen. Good centipede fertilizer examples are 10-10-10 or 15-0-15. Centipede is NOT like other grasses and will burn more easily and is much slower to recover than true grasses.
Always purchase your lawn maintenance products from a reputable Nursery, Garden Center or Sod Grower, for best results and the "right" products for your area.
