Nobody Saves the World: 8 hours in and still loving it

in #gaming9 days ago

I was at first quite hesitant to spend $30 on a 1GB game that looked as though it could go either way as far as quality is concerned but then when I was informed that the developers, DrinkBox Studios were the creators of this game that was all I really needed to know. They are the people behind the amazing Guacamelee games and if you haven't played those, they are absolutely fantastic as well.

A game this small normally doesn't get a lot of mainstream press but that is just fine with me because I feel as though basically all of the "mainstream" press are a bunch of liars that are paid to say the things that they do. Every little thing that studios like Square-Enix or Bioware makes is celebrated as being the new "best thing ever" while smaller studios are the only games that are actually evaluated fairly. One only need look at the way that Dragon Age, The Veilguard was pushed on all of us while at the same time having a massive disparity between the professional critics and user scores.

I haven't enjoyed almost anything made by a triple-A studio in quite some time whereas I think the true gems are found in small studios that are filled with a few very dedicated gamers.

Nobody Save the World is one of those games that probably flew under most people's radar and that is a real shame because honestly, this is an absolutely fantastic game.

If you just look at screenshots it doesn't really do the game justice and this is true of basically everything that Drinkbox Studios has ever made. But I am a big advocate for good controls and a neat story over extremely lifelike graphics. Certain games that look amazing are basically movies that you sometimes control whereas in this game, the controls are mostly really tight and the story, while limited, is both amusing and amazing at the same time.

For one thing, I really enjoy the dialogue decision that you have to make that in no way at all affect the game. In the instance above you are not even given the choice of giving Randy the wand and it will just continue to ask the same questions over and over again until you choose the correct one.

Combat isn't overly complicated but it also isn't so easy that you are just going to blaze through the game either. Instead of having ultra-complicated combos and precision timing necessary on parries you instead need to pay attention to the type of abilities that you are using compared to the type of defenses that the enemies you are fighting against have. It's really quite simple and when your attack makes a "tink" sound it means that you are causing no damage and you know you need to switch to some other form of attack or else you aren't going to accomplish anything.

There are also little things that you will encounter pretty early on in the game that don't make a lot of sense such as these giant nests. Later on when you get the ability to transform into an egg, you suddenly realize that there is a great incentive to return to these areas.

You get given a ton of characters that you can transform into and leveling up these characters is made simple enough that you can easily max out just about anything that you want to. Simply return to an easier area on the map and do a certain skill a certain amount of times in a row and voila! You now have leveled up that toon to the highest level that you possibly can.

For hardcore players, this game might seem too simplistic but for a filthy casual like myself this game is absolutely perfect. You are going to die every now and then but it isn't some sort of continual death thing that irritates me in gaming the likes of which you will face in Soulslike games. I mean no offense if you like that sort of game but for a lot of people including me, these games are just too damn hard. I do not have enough free time to dedicate to learning the exact right moment to press a block button simply to get past an enemy only to discover that which lies beyond is even more complicated and difficult.

In Nobody Saves the World I think that almost anyone, children included, can have a lot of fun with this.

Also, he game is quite long. It is long enough to keep you interested in make the $30 you spent on the game seem worthwhile. I have already put 8 hours into the game and I have barely scratched the surface of what this game holds for me. According to the trophies, I have only completed about 15% of the overall achievements.

For me, this game is one that you can lean back on the sofa and simply enjoy. You don't need to be hyper-focused in order to not die. Even when you do die it doesn't set you back very far in most instances and honestly, this is the way I like my games to be.

So far, the slug is my favorite character to play as

Therefore, if you are a casual or less-skilled gamer like I am, I think that this game is a wonderful option. Is it worth $30? Well, I think so, but I would be willing to bet that it will go down in price soon-ish.

For people that enjoy silly and simplistic RPG's that are actually innovative, this game is one of the most unique games I have ever played. The boys and girls over at Drinkbox really know what they are doing and I celebrate their every success. I think I can see that the people behind the game are likely fans of Rick and Morty because the humor is quite similar, even though it is more PG rated in its delivery.

Check it out and let me know what you think!
