Expanding my gaming content: console games coming soonsteemCreated with Sketch.

in #gaming5 years ago (edited)

I have been posting my gameplay for the last few months and the community on Steem and Publish0x consistently like, upvote and curate my gaming content. I am very thankful for that, though it was quite unexpected. When I started I was not so sure about it, but now I can see there is a big community of gaming curators out there.

My gaming history started on Mac, Before the modern OSX that we know now. This was known as Apple's classic Mac OS operating system. I got to play an early Bungie game called Marathon. It was like Doom but for Mac.. haha It predated the Halo series and had easter eggs tying the series together. I played that game for hundreds of hours. It also got me into modding, as you could modify the physics model and weapons and projectiles. That gave me nearly endless usage trying out different custom setups. I played other games on Mac such as A-10 Attack and a few others. Good times growing up as a child with my Mac.

When I was a teenager I got a PC, running Windows ME and then 2000. I started playing classics such as Unreal Tournament and many others. I also played console games like Super Nintendo, Dreamcast, PS1, PS2, N64 and more.

The above consoles can be played today on PC, using a powerful processor and an application called an emulator. In the recent years emulation has come a very long way, making most games PS2 and below playable. Some PS3, Wii U, and even Switch games can be played on PC using emulators but its spotty at best.

With my Ryzen 7 overclocked along with my RAM beefed up I should be able to play alot of Sixth generation (1998–2013) and below games.

Console generations above

In addition to that, I can play games from any countries out there, there is no region locking on emulators. Growing up on the consoles I had little to no access to mods on consoles until I was an adult. So being able to play games from other countries may be interesting.

Some of the emulators i am planning on using are the following, along with links to the download pages:

Sega Genesis/Megadrive

Super Nintendo - Snes9x

Nintendo 64 - Project64
https://www.pj64-emu.com/public-releases
Dreamcast - Redream
https://redream.io/download
Playstation 1 - ePSXe
https://www.epsxe.com/download.php
Playstation 2 - PCSX2
https://pcsx2.net/download.html
Playstation 3 - RPCS3
https://rpcs3.net/download
Gamecube - Dolphin
https://dolphin-emu.org/download/
Wii U - Cemu
https://cemu.info/
Xbox - XQEMU
https://xqemu.com/
Xbox 360 - Zenia
https://xenia.jp/download/

Using these emulators, games can sometimes run even better than they did on their native consoles. And high texture packs can be loaded into emulators like Cemu and others to really make the games look great at higher resolutions.

I have also made improvements in my recording quality of games, when I started I was posting huge videos so quality would not be lost but I found it causing my videos to buffer and freeze. I lowered quality quite a bit but was not happy with the results. So now I record my videos at high quality usually using Lanczos downscale filtering on OBS. And then render the final video in Premiere using a 6 to 8 peak bitrate setting to give me the final product. I find the gaming footage looks much better being recorded at a high quality and then rendered at a lower bit-rate, that way video files are slim and play well online while still retaining quality.

I gave the Playstation 2 emulator (PCSX2) with SSX 3 a try yesterday, it played and recorded well at a solid 60FPS. I was surprised to see how much GPU the emulator used, but was glad as in the past they used nearly none. Maybe that is why we have made leaps and strides in emulation in the last few decades. Figuring out the controls is a little weird, im using a generic xbox controller. So the onscreen buttons dont match up to my controller, but I think overtime I should get able to get the hang of which buttons goto which ones onscreen.

Once I finish posting my last batch of videos I will start adding console gameplay in with my gaming content I post near daily. Just like the mods on my PC games, using an emulator gives me a special feeling in my heart, and knowing how much Nintendo and others have tried going after emulators and failed it gives my inner tinkerer heart a good feeling to give them a try.

Lastly, a great video by a Youtube producer named Nerrel, explaining emulation and the law history behind it.

And one other channel I like to follow for gaming emulation and modding.

Hi! I'm total noob in gaming. So from your post, am I correct I can use the emulator to play all those ps2 and xbox game on my gaming PC and can use the controller too?

I've wanted to test my basic gaming laptop HP Pavilion Gaming Laptop and looking for a game that I can play with controller not keyboard wasd and mouse only. If there are any exist for that. Haha.

Yes that is correct I am emulating the games on my desktop PC. I use a generic xbox controller that works on my computer. It's called a PowerA wired xbox controller. Works well for most emulators. But sometimes you need to map the buttons in the emulator but it's not too hard.

Best of luck getting them to run, desktops will usually handle it better as they can have full sized graphics cards.

But depending on your laptop you should be able to play ps1 or ps2 games.
