Gamer Parent's take on the Rise of eSPORTS Gaming Universities

It's the first time in days since I have been on my PC, I have been so content with "the new phone" (More about that next time), that when I got on and opened the Blizzard Client, I noticed something that says "Tespa University - Enroll Today"

So out of curiosity, I had to check it out to know what was in store. And low and behold, as expected, a gaming school but this time, advertised on the very platform (Client) that I have been using more so than any other client. The developer I have come to love over the years, Blizzard.

Fact Check about me: I am a nerd/geek whatever you'd call it. Not so much as successful certified gamer, just a gamer and a very selective gamer at that. And I like the competitive ones more so than the single player ones but that does not restrict me from playing them too.

This is great news. And having to partner with a big developer such as Blizzard it all makes sense. The world is evolving, people are now able to see what they have not been able to see before. The large potential of a gaming career.

More good news, the world is starting to pickup. Gaming schools like TESPA are popping up all over the US, let alone the world. With the Dota 2 "The International" Prize Money already around 23M-24M USD, who would not want to sharpen their skills to get a chance to take home a chunk of that dough?

So where was this when I needed it the most?

My college days were spent on Computer Shops more than the actual school itself. I have had a rough time finishing a bachelor's degree, because I was caught up with playing games with friends rather than copying a friend's homework.

Back then, I have always wondered, when would the Philippines have a school that is dedicated to gaming. An addition/incorporation of gaming in it's curriculum. There has to be plenty to be learned from gaming, and they should come to realize the potentials of gaming.

My dream was heard. Back in May 9, it was announced that the Philippines was getting their very own ESPORTS school. And guess what, it is just a few kilometers from where I live, at the University of the Visayas New School, Mandaue, Cebu. And they will be offering esports and game development in their Senior High and design track.

“We’ll have game strategy for Dota 2 and we will have game design and development animation and 2D and 3D animation, and of course, game creation. After two years, the students can either choose to be game creators, designers, or e-sports players in the professional league,” Genesis Raña, founder and school director of UVNS, told SunStar.

With the recent success of the local Filipino Dota 2 Team - TNC, I am pretty sure plenty would have already accounted the number of $$$ raked in from all that prize money won from tournaments world wide.

Time will tell when this will be adopted by other schools in the country.

So this esports gaming schools came a little too late for me. This is no longer something I would be able to take part of. But this is definitely something my SON can BE a part of. My parents at that time dreaded the fact that I went to computer shops more than school. I have to admit, (LOL) that skipping classes most especially just to play games is not something you would expect from a child (teenager - but I know this was childish).

I know that there would come a time that my son would make that decision. As a gamer, gaming schools are a blessing. But as a parent, and wanting what is best for the future of your children, you know what is at stake here. Being a gamer, I know full well what risks are in store. Much like a musician trying to make a name for themselves. The passion will always be there, but is it enough to drive a thriving future? It all goes back to being the responsible parent we should be aye?
