my favorite java (flip phone) games
Flip phones were a gateway drug into gaming for me. I never had any home or handheld consoles growing up and so java games were all I knew. The games I played on my flip phone influenced the types of gamer I grew to become. Simple controls, challenging game-play and no fluff ( long cut-scenes or text) is the formula of a great game in my opinion. That is why I prefer short and concise experiences to long ,commitment-type games nowadays.
so, without further ado, these are my favorite java games in no particular order( I'm sticking with one game from a genre so this post doesn't get over-crowded by platformers)
1- cyberpunk the Arasaka's plot (platformer)
This game is a beauty. Game-play consists of platforming with shooting as the main combat mechanic. The character can be leveled-up and customized by pick-ups strewn about.
Simple and addictive. The game consists of Rambo just standing on a boat which is slowly moving down stream. The objective is to shoot enemies, projectile weapons and other hazards before they mow you down.
3-Age of empires: the Asian dynasties (strategy)
I'm still amazed at how good this game looks. It is basically a de-make of Microsoft's popular expansion for the age of empires series but for java game, you will be hard-pressed to find something with this much polish and depth.
Straight forward. Avoid enemy ammunition, and eliminate all hostiles on the ground. May not have aged well graphically speaking, but the game-play loop of clearing an area to move forward never gets old.
This might seem like cheating as this game is basically a side scroller with platforming elements. But bounce is unlike any game in the java world. It was a pack-in game for most later model Nokia phones. Game-play consists of dodging obstacles as you jump through hoops( the aim being to clear all hoops). What sets this game apart is the amount of abilities garnered through pick-ups and how these abilities are used to solve problems presented by the environment. Truly one of a kind.
