[KRASSVS DELIGHTS] - RIMWORLD (PC, MAC, LINUX) - inspired by Dwarf Fortress and Firefly
I love these exciting times for indie-games. Even if you try to read all you can about computer games, there is still the odd one that will just slip by your attention. Actually, this can have its benefits. As happened to me with another survival-crafting sim - excellent FACTORIO which I can also deeply recommend - I discovered Rimworld when it stumbled onto Steam recently, despite it being in development for some years now.
The game is still marked "Early Access" by Ludeon Studios - its developer. Still, the current build is fully playable and presents one of the most compelling games on the survival market.
Rimworld starts from a scenario editor that I left untouched and just clicked through, chose the standard "Story UI" and I got spit onto a random region of some off-the-grid planet where three people and one pet survive a disaster onboard their starship.
The key to Rimworlds success is the finely tuned event system, that will put you on Cloud Number Nine on a nice autumn day with everybody happy - only to destroy the life of your beloved survivors next day on winter one when you realize you should have put more focus on farming vegetables instead of decimating the female specimens of local wildlife. Only one example of what can (and will, probably) happen. I don't want to spoil the event system - just know that it does an awesome job!
The social system is great too - people can form bonds, even marry, bond with their pet, visit graves, etc.
All in all I would award Rimworld a top spot on my favorite games list. Try it out - it is 30 bucks well spent.
