Part 3 of our Middle Earth: Shadow of War playthrough picks up immediately where we left off. You successfully defended Minas Ithil against a second siege by the Dark Lord’s armies. For your help, the General’s daughter Idril has vowed to speak to her father on your behalf about accessing the Palantir to use against Sauron. With the vision granted by Celebrimbor’s mark on the city’s watchtowers you uncovered ancient secrets which led to his legendary armor, the Bright Lord’s armor. You also uncovered a foreboding memory fragment from Shelob’s past in which she warns that her gift of sight is a curse upon men. But so far it has led you to arrive in time to save Minas Ithil from falling to Sauron’s forces. You set off deeper into Mordor to seek Shelob’s council once more.

The Doorway to Mordor

You travel to the pass of Cirith Ungol a high mountain pass into Mordor and the location of Shelob’s lair. Before you seek her out you have to deal with the orcs in the region. After battling with low level orc captains you scale the areas watchtower’s and cleanse them of Sauron’s dark influence. In doing so you infuse the towers with Celebrimbor’s mark instead. As with Minas Ithil you are now able to delve into the ancient secrets of the area.

Memory fragments from Shelob’s past come into focus. She recollects how she took the form of a spider because she wanted to walk the web of fate but the Dark Lord chose something different. He chose a shell of cold dark steel. He became a machine. Celebrimbor remarks from the very beginning Sauron was a creature built for war. You learn Shelob is an ancient being who has been in Mordor since before the first stone of Barad-Dur, the Dark Lord’s fortress, was laid. Celebrimbor thinks she desires to build her own empire. You disagree and believe she’s seen enough of empire building. With a little more insight into Shelob’s past you seek her out.

An Unlikely Ally

Along the way you’re attacked by an olog-hai, a massive and dangerous war troll. To your surprise Gollum joins the fray in what seems to be some failed attempt to protect you. After you kill the troll Gollum boasts I saved you. You ask why would you save me? Gollum’s smile turns to disgust and he says I wasn’t talking to you, stupid ranger. Celebrimbor appears and suggests Gollum is working for the spider. Gollum rejects that and says the Dark Mistress watches over Gollum, Gollum watches over the Bright Master and Bright Master kills the Dark Lord. Celebrimbor retorts and the spider pulls the strings. You acknowledge this but say we share a common enemy in Sauron and you can’t always choose your allies. With that in mind you agree to follow Gollum back to Shelob’s lair.

Entering her lair Celebrimbor demands his ring back. Shelob snaps at him. Silence ring maker you forget your place. And how about you she asks? You tell her you’re here for Minas Ithil. She asks even if it’s already lost? You say there must be a way, there was truth in your vision, grant me another. In the vision she conjures you see Idril being killed by one of Sauron’s assassins. Celebrimbor tells you many will pass before the Dark Lord is defeated. You tell him with this new knowledge you can kill the assassin and perhaps save Idril from this fate. Celebrimbor tells you whether Idril lives or dies it will not shift the tide of war and it’s her father Castamir who needs to be protected. If he dies you may lose the Palantir forever.

Stopping the Assassin

Gollum says he can help the Bright Lord find the assassin. He recognizes the assassin’s curved Morgul blade and says the assassin has been killing Uruk bodyguards of the Cirith Ungol Warchief. He sneaks you into enemy territory where you find the assassin’s victims and search for clues. The clues lead you to an encampment where you find the assassin surrounded by his men but you are still able to dispatch him. He was clever and much tougher than expected but he was no match for your skills combined with Celebrimbor’s abilities.

Let’s hope his death has changed what Shelob saw for Minas Ithil you say. Minas Ithil will go the way of all flesh, we only need the seeing stone Celebrimbor replies. You look at him in anger and demand to know how much of his soul was lost in that ring. He doesn’t reply and simply disappears. Happenstance sees you meeting up with Baranor deep inside Cirith Ungol. He tells you he’s on a mission to kill the Warchief’s last surviving body guard Muzu the Throat Slasher. He hopes killing Muzu will open the Warchief up for an attack. Minas Ithil would surely gain some breathing room with the Warchief destroyed and his army in chaos. You inform him you are hunting the same foe and decide to work together.

Exposing the Warchief

Baranor proves to be a worthy comrade in arms and together you sneak and slice your way to the body guard without difficulty. Along the way you dominate a deadly Caragor mount. Muzu is a fierce warrior but you are able to out maneuver him and slowly whittle him down before delivering the final blow. With every bodyguard of the Cirith Ungol Warchief lying dead on the ground you set your sites on completing the task.

Before you continue however Celebrimbor teaches you about Aphadad; the virtue of obedience. He explains that when he fought Sauron, then as now raising an army in Mordor meant overwhelming the orcs with a display of power. That power was the one ring. He says in Mordor the orcs obey power and nothing more. Dwarves and men do likewise even if they tell themselves it’s a matter of honor or vengeance. You also visit his barrow in the region and reclaim the Bright Lord’s Cloak. This legendary item will surely help in your battle against the Warchief.

Oh my goodness! I had forgotten about this game. This looks gorgeous.

It is a really good looking game.. except oddly the faces look pretty bad during the in game cinematics.. they look fine in the pre-rendered stuff just not the in game stuff. Other than that though great graphics. The game is huge too. I've been playing it for a while now and still haven't finished. But I may have done things in the wrong order so many side quests and things to pull your focus away.

I LOVE LOTR

Me too! I remember first seeing the cartoon for Lord of the rings that only covered the first half of the trilogy when I was a kid. I so wanted to know the rest of it. I must have watched that cartoon a dozen times it was epic!

I was like 8 that time i guess... we did watch those cartoon Lord of the rings anticipating the real action movie! till now we re-read and watch the LOTR books and movies. its a shame i cant do any fan art right now but im making Eowyn vs, the nazgul first chance I get :D the story is just epic!

It now makes me wonder. Are there any LOTR games that are not 'third person'? :)
