Reasons Why NPCs Might Be Afraid of You

in #gaming7 years ago

"It's a beautiful day outside. Birds are singing, flowers are blooming... On days like these, kids like you... Should be burning in hell."

-Sans (Undertale)

Remember the NPCs you've met in games you've played? Remember those folks whose life saved from a monster by you, saying thanks and gave you gold? Or the soldiers you assisted to defeat a dragon attack that the town's chief rewarded you a legendary weapon as thanks?

They may looked happier, felt less unease than before all because as they said "thanks to you". But you know, what if what they don't really accept you as their savior? And not just them, but all of the NPCs including your companions. Maybe because...
(Of course all this is a joke, not everyone do this think this way and also don't apply to every games)

You Save the Day...For the Prizes

Whether it is at the end or along way your journey, who don't want to see that shiny items in their inventory? Money or whatever it is that you can Press F to gladly take. Loot is like.. Those ghastly whispers the Ring Bearer hears in LOTR. It's not courage that let you defeat your foes, it's loot. As long as there is loot, there is still hope.

"What is it? A pack of wolves troubling your farm, ate three of your cows, both of your parents and destroyed your marijuana plants? Is this a minor side quest you're giving me? Fine, I'll take it. But I'll get on it after I finish another minor side quest with better rewards and more loot."

You 'Use' Your Companions as You Please

Meeting you probably one of the best thing that happen to those friendly NPCs that are nice enough to do anything you told them to, like carrying all your stuff even the ones you don't really need but you still keep nontheless. You know, because "Maybe someday you'll need it".

Or telling those tanky durable friends in bulky armour to charge towards the enemies while you are attacking from safe spot. Well of course we could call that teamwork, but what if deep down in their polygonal little heart, they don't really enjoy that sort of teamwork?

Even worse, you know that epic battle that was so great that you make a save point before that so you can do that battle over and over again? Your companions might as well feels deja vu everytime you do it, having a glimpse of that moment but not sure when and how and they aren't telling because of the frighten feeling of being stabbed again.

You Steal From Them And Still Get the Reward

Eventhough you know that there will be rewards at the end of the day, you'll still sneak into a family of two's residence and fill your pocket and every extra pockets you have with every single valuables in the house along with stuff that you probably don't really need. But those stuff could still turned into gold so, sorry I was wrong then.

No matter how famous you could be for your lockpicking skill, the family will never think that you are the one who break into their house. So they will still gladly reward you with that family heirloom legendary sword.

You Don't Save the Entire Day

A bunch of homeless folks starving to death, bandits roaming the roads causing trouble to everyone, minor monsters that are probably nothing for you but a different story for a commoner popping out out of nowhere, problems here and there, all those mess are waiting for the player--for you--to make a dashing entrance and get rid of them.

This could be because that loot bussiness I mentioned earlier, no loot no problem-solving, or you simply chose a different way to beat the game; Speedrun. With you suddenly disappear through a glitch for example, straight to the final boss fight and defeat the great evil, who will save those poor NPCs? Who will get rid of the lesser evils remaining?

You Are Unstoppable

"Welcome to the world where everything here are armed to the teeth and live only to murder you the second you take a step." But no worries! Because you are the main protagonist who destined to beat the game while gaining achievements throughout your journey.

But really, you are more than that. It's not weapons or armours, it's the ability to load game. With that you are the most unstoppable being in the game's world. But oh there are several game characters that comes with a countermeasure, those with 4th wall breaking ability, such as Flowey from Undertale and the infamous Psycho Mantis from Metal Gear Solid. But still, not even those 4th wall breaker could stop you.

Chaos is Your Source of Fun

No matter how much of a hero you are, once The Song of Boredom starts playing in your head.. That town full of people also start to look so interesting. And so the next thing to do is to hit the Quicksave button, pull out your best weapon and let the fun begin!

For those NPCs whose slain without knowing why their savior suddenly turns against them, this "fun" of yours is a misery for them. But hey, fun is a matter of perspective, you know. For you, there is always fun in funeral, am I right? No? K then.

Fun Fact:
Some of the Undertale's SFX are not originally made by Toby Fox. For example, Flowey's line at the end of the Ruins responding to your plan to share your LOVE to everyone; "That's a wonderful idea!", is actually a high pitched dialogue from an old McDonald's commercial.

Your articles are really great! I enjoy reading you:) you treat the subject in depth, with humor and social satyr. And I like the small quotes at the beginning of each post (I'm glad to know a lot of them ^^)

I'm happy to hear it, I thought they are all terrible jokes or cringeworthy(?). And eventhough someone give me a compliment, which I appreaciate, I still think that way. Anyway, thanks a lot!

You Don't Save the Entire Day

Reminds me of the Witcher's quests. Choosing one thing over another when prompted for a decision more often than not screws the people related to the decision you have not chosen...that quest about the tree spirit, no matter what you choose either the village or kids suffer. Ugh, it gets to me that I cant save everyone.

I know, right? Even the actual storyline of the game itself make you go through that. Is this the tree spirit you are talking about?

I don't remember but most likely it is THAT tree spirit. I didn't touch the Witcher sequels after that, lol. I'm too much of a softie :P
