Read this before you buy any new games
A recent study by Music Magpie found that gamers don’t seem to be getting the most out their games. The top 50 bestselling games of the last few years, on average have not even been half completed. Before you think about buying new release games this year, think about how many games you might already have that still have a few more hours of enjoyment left in them.
Of course, there is no single way to measure the enjoyment of a game. How do you know when you’re sick of one game and want to play a new one? There is no reliable way to measure this, you just know. This study measured game completion by taking the average achievements that were unlocked by players on PS4 and Xbox One. A few things might come to mind when you think about in game achievements, you often get most of them by accident, you have probably never achieved them all for one game and probably don’t plan on it. You might also know that no game is created equal when it comes to achievements, some games have 5 achievements and some have 100, the latter being much harder to achieve. Some games reward you with an achievement for completing the tutorial, some you’ll put in many hours before the little ‘Achievement Unlocked’ notification pops up on your screen. You will notice in the infographic below that the two Far Cry games and the two Assassin’s Creed games are clustered together, indicating similar achievement difficulties between different games of the same franchise. Many factors will determine the average completion rate for a game, other than it’s enjoy-ability.
Each of these completion rates, including the highest are considerably low. While it may not be the best indicator of how much enjoyment players got out of these games, it shows if you revisit an old favorite there still may be many more hours to get out of it. Before you go to spend your money on a bunch of expensive new releases, maybe you could go achievement hunting.

Loved skyrim. I crashed the main story lane on normal and never touched it again. Trying to replay it for the side stuff seemed hard to get to.
Indeed! The amount of hours I spent on Skyrim would shock anybody haha!
Wow... That's the totally opposite of my story lol. I played hundreds of hours of Skyrim and still have yet to do the main quest. Amazing game design really to offer so much diversity.
I really loved playing Skyrim, but I got stuck in a rock and couldn't move. Haven't really played it since
This is quite frankly the funniest thing I've heard all day haha :)
On a personal level I look at hours played vs $$$ spent. If I'm getting better than $1/hour, then the games been good value for me.
I am also an achievement hunter though, so I've played some games for an extra 10+ hours after I've finished playing the game just to tick off a couple of troublesome things. But when I 100% a game, I feel that I'm completely done with it and can put it away. When there's some left, unless I've given them a good shot I'll feel there's still something I could do with the game, but if I don't enjoy it, I may not come back to it. But it'll still sit in that folder of 'achievements incomplete' until forever.
I also note that I've got 3 of the games on the top 10 listed. but as a PC player, and early purchase, I have no idea on the Minecraft achievements, I've not played Saints Row and only have about 90 mins in Skyrim.
Yes I have those feels when you haven't given the game a full crack at it. I have a decent amount I just completed but didn't necessarily do the side stories. There is just so many games out nowadays I'd only see myself sinking in alot of time to get 100% for particular game I really love!
I usualy don't give a fuck about the achievements. I play trough the main story and also complete the side quests (if there are any) if they are interesting. I always play the multiplayer option if the game has it. I believe almost all the time multiplayer is where the fun happens. And also I like to fuck around a bit if it's some sort of sandbox. But achievements don't give me anything at all. They are pointless really. If I get them by accident ? OK. If I don't get them ? OK. Going after achievements feels like grinding for no
Achievements are usually bonuses for me. I never really actively chase them but yes I know what you mean :)
I'm not gonna lie I am not ever looking for achievements in the games I play. Although to be fair I play games for the online multiplayer parts anyways. Other than some games I have to play through on the Wii U with my daughter, I don't play campaigns really. I occasionally add to my repertoire of games and grab another one (got a racing game recently that I haven't opened yet - but I'm a casual gamer) but usually just stay to a few. I change up play between OverWatch, The Division (which yes is kind of campaign), and Halo 5 (multiplayer online only). So I feel like I get a good value out of my games.
These studies can't really be complete though if they aren't taking values of things out of campaign/stories. Just my opinion. Thanks for posting.
For me, I enjoy my games first. Then I get all trophies until Platinum. Sometimes I'll even go back to my old games @gamersclassified. Also, I only get like 1 or 3 games a year because they're too expensive, and I don't want to overwhelm myself with so many games. I'm currently playing Prey and Tekken 7.
Ahhh Tekken 7... Love it to bits but absolutely terrible in it :)
I never concern myself with unlocking achievements, I always unlock them by accident. Maybe there should be a crypto linked to game achievements 😋 maybe that would keep me interested.
I often plan to fully complete a game after the first 'run', but I never actually do 😆
Indeed. It all comes as a bonus! Second runs through games is always more enjoyable for me. Instead of frantically trying to finish levels, I take my time and enjoy other components I may never have noticed haha
