Tail 'Gator (Review) | Truly a hidden gem from the Game Boy
One day, my brother remembered one of the games he loved so much when he was younger; it was a game from the original Game Boy system. That game got my interest and I decided to play it and see how good it was. Without knowing that game would become one of my favorites in that system: Tail 'Gator, developed and published by Natsume.
Maybe some of you will sound familiar with the name of the developer; it’s the same company that created the Harvest Moon series and Wild Guns. Without less to say, let's get started!
The premise is simple: a crocodile called Charlie is ordered to stop a dragon warlord called 'Basso Gila’, which he moved his castle and army to the peaceful kingdom of Moberry and plans to destroy it and have the ultimate rule.
You (Charlie) have to cross in five different worlds with four levels each, which you can choose freely. Each level has more or less five rooms, you must use your tail to knock off enemies and break chests to find the key in order to pass the next room. Also in the chests you can find useful items such as bonus points, hearts to increase your health, items to power-up your tail, and bombs that can defeat all enemies on-screen. The bombs are the most useful item in the game, so use it wisely.
The game is fun and addictive with this dynamic, at the beginning, the game is very easy, but when you advance on each world, the difficulty increases, especially in the lasts levels, which increases drastically and it can be frustrating sometimes. I recommend you to play it in shorts periods when you are there.
One thing I didn’t like about this game is the enemies respawn after some time; it can be annoying but necessary to maintain the difficulty. In addition, you game uses passwords to ¨save¨ your progress, but at least the passwords are not too long.
Tail ‘Gator is a good game for those who wants something different from the action-adventure genre. I recommend you to try it!
you took me back in time a bit there. Although I never played this particular title, i know that there are likely many others that are quite similar to it.
I miss how amazing it was to have a Game Boy back in the day. Everything was so fresh and new back then. :)
Great write up pal!
Thank you! I'm so glad you like it.
