Monopoly Deal: The card game with all the fun of Monopoly in a fraction of the time!steemCreated with Sketch.

in #gaming7 years ago

In the past, I've reviewed several computer games and one board game, but today, I'd like to review a card game that I recently got the chance to play: Monopoly Deal.

Monopoly Deal

I know many of you might groan when you hear the name Monopoly. I'm not sure I know many people who have the time to sit down and play a full game. I imagine if you did want to play a full game, you'd have to dedicate a table in your home to the game board and play it in segments whenever time allowed.

I think next time there's a movie where the hero enters the lair of the villain, instead of a table dedicated to a perpetual chess game, there should be one dedicated to Monopoly. It might make the villain seem more sinister. Anyhow, I digress.

Monopoly Deal, from the makers of Monopoly, is a 2-5 player card game that is much quicker, and in my opinion, easier to learn the nuances of, than its board game counterpart.

What makes it so fun?

Monpoly Deal Play

Monopoly Deal has many of the same terms as Monopoly, such as properties and rent, so if you're familiar with the board game, you should pick up on the rules fairly easily.

The object of the game is to collect three full property sets. Some sets have two, others three, and there are four railroad properties. Players accomplish this by taking turns playing up to three cards out of their hands. Each player begins with five cards, drawing two more at the start of each turn.

There are several different types of cards:

  • Money cards- used as currency in the game to pay other players when rent is charged or other debts are owed
  • Property cards- Cards with property names on them. May be collected and placed into sets.
  • Action cards- cards that allow specific actions such as collecting debt, charging rent, and drawing extra cards.
  • Wild cards- May be used as any property that matches their color.

I won't take the time to describe every detail of gameplay, but there are some interesting rules that allow in game behaviors that players of the board game will never experience.

Certain action cards allow players to steal properties from other players, and there is also an action card that allows a player to steal a full set of properties from another player! These "free-for-all" rules caused my wife to exclaim, "Anarchy!" the first time we played the game together.

The game is tremendous fun once each person has learned the rules and methods of obtaining properties, charging rent, hoarding cash, and using wild cards effectively. I began by playing it with just my wife, so I know it's much fun for just two players. However, I had the opportunity recently to play the game with the full five players, and I must say that the game takes on a different atmosphere when there are multiple players to charge rent from and longer stretches between your turns.

You definitely have to have thick skin to play this game, because of all of the underhanded stealing and charging that goes on. However, it's very interesting to play the game with people who are extremely competitive because, while there are many elements of strategy, most of the time one player's choices can turn the whole game upside down.

I highly recommend this game to anyone who enjoys a quick, fun, card game. Also, if you like the concept of Monopoly, but don't have the time to play a full game, this game can get you your fix without the hours of time invested into a game that never ends.

If you're interested, here are the full rules that are included with the game if you'd like to read more (click the images to access the full resolution versions).

There's also an entire website dedicated to the rules of the game if you can't read the rules in the images.

I hope you'll give Monopoly Deal a try. It's a great game that I'll enjoy for many years to come. It's likely available at all major retailers, and I purchased mine on Amazon, so I know you can get a copy there.

As always, thanks for stopping by! If you have other card or board game recommendations, I'd love to hear them! My family really enjoys getting together to play games!

We need a new version that involves bitcoin 😃

Hmmmm... That would be interesting. I suppose the properties could be different coins and you try to collect them all! Of course there would have to be new action cards like "Exchange closing!" or "Flash crash 40% in an hour" or "lost private keys."

Could make a fun game...

Thanks for stopping by!

Looks like a fun game! I remember playing monopoly for days on end with my brother as a kids. Lol

Thanks so much, @chelsea88!

It's definitely a lot of fun to play. I haven't played a good old fashioned long game of Monopoly in a long time. Perhaps I'll convince my family to play over the holidays....

Thanks for your comment!

I hadnt seen this one but it sounds quite interesting may look for it while with family over christmas may be fun to play with them

I hope you find it and enjoy playing! Let me know if you do!

I will let you know

Greetings @ethandsmith! I think it's a good table game, well although the original monopoly in my opinion is a bit better .. and since you want to know about board games I invite you to discover the wonderful game of domino, I find your information very interesting greetings friends!

I will have to get back into dominoes! I had an aunt who really loved to play the game when I was growing up, so I played a little. It's been a very long time, though.

I must admit, playing Monopoly Deal makes me want to get out Monopoly and play a game. I've been unable to convince my wife to play a game with me so far, but I'll be sure to let you know if it happens!

Thanks so much for your comment!

Still love playing monopoly, maybe once a year haha. This one looks like similar fun, just without the time commitment of the original version

Yes. I think that's one of the reasons why it's great! Maybe you'll get the chance to give this game a try!

Happy to see a gamer. We're actually working on a new project which has to do with games.... can't say much about it yet though.

I would say I'm a casual gamer at best. Haha I really enjoy board games and card games, but I only recently started playing games for PC. I almost never play new release games. I wait for them to go on sale and then play them. However, I'm always intrigued by new projects, so be sure to let me know if there's anything I can help with!

Thanks for stopping by!

I will announce it for sure on our blog ... Mike is hacking away :)

That sounds like it would be quick and fun, unlike Monopoly which is either quick (if you play it properly by the rules) or fun (when it's one of your first games you've played, and you aren't getting dragged slowly to a painful loss)

Especially now that there are so many better games around, I know my kid will likely never play monopoly, but this might work. Also looks like it would travel well, which is something I look for in a game too

I believe it would travel very nicely. We'll definitely be taking it on our holiday travels to play with our families. You're right about there being much better games, but I think it's fun to at least play Monopoly once so that you can get the classic feel of it. It's amazing that the game has been around so long.

Thanks for stopping by! I appreciate your comment!

That is pretty cool! Thanks for sharing the review. Sounds like a fun game and something that we would like to play (without the kids)! We like Phase 10 around here...or have played it in the past. We also just recently got Apples to Apples Big Picture Edition. It's a lot of fun for all ages - my kids love it (except I kind of lost it when we moved - it's here somewhere but just in a box...probably with the oven thermometer). Yes, I think it would be hilarious to have a table with monopoly on it instead of a chess board. You should submit that to some Hollywood screenwriter people. ;) Good thought.

Phase 10 is another one of my favorites. Also Rook and Skip-Bo. You can tell that my family enjoys card games. haha I hope you get the chance to play this game sometime so you can let me know what you think!

I'm sure you'll find the other games and things when you go through the boxes eventually. haha Thanks for your kind words about the monopoly board. I'll see if I can pass that idea along to someone who could use it! haha

I think my kids are too young for Phase 10. That game can take forever! I need to find that game and play it some evening with the hubs. Haven't done that in a long time.

Yes. It definitely can take a while. Or it can be over quickly, depending on how the cards fall. I always hated it when people would be able to phase on their first turn because they got dealt exactly what they needed. haha

I'm sure you'll enjoy playing it again if you can find the cards.

Our house is a disaster still. Boxes galore. But I have seen the box(es) of games (we brought a ton to loan out as part of our lending library). If we could just get the last few things finished up so we can get everything finally settled... There is a light at the end of the tunnel though...

Sounds like a very cool way to play monopoly:-)

It's quite fun! You should give it a try!

I really enjoyed this article, @ethandsmith! You've convinced me to buy this game for the Christmas family get together week. I'm going to order one as soon as I get done with this reply, so it arrives in time!

I've upvoted and resteemed this post for you. I found the link for it in #unmentionables.

Cheers!
@mitneb

Thanks so much for the resteem!

I'm glad you are going to get a copy! It's such a fun game. I can't wait to hear about your experience playing it! I hope it arrives on time as well!
