VR Games, are the future?
This is my opinion as game developer, actually working as game designer at Not 4 Humans. I mean, I’m not a clairvoyant, but this is just my point of view by looking the actual status of the industry.
We can distinguish two types of VR(Virtual Reality) games, experiences and real games. The first type, the experiences, is just to show the power and the possibilities of the VR. With this you can try the immersive of this tech, see the motion capture with the motion controllers and much more. But, the big but, it's just an experience, normally short, without a history, without thinking about the replayability... A lot of people refuse of VR because they think this is something incomplete, and if they only play this type of games, they're right.
But, we're interested in the second types, the real games, they're a GAME with all the letters. They've all the components of the games you can know. We can see some examples, like "R.I.G.S." in PS VR, this is like any sportive game, you have your career mode, the options to hire or fired the other players of your team, buy anothers robots... Also, you have and online mode for play with your friends (or another players) and it's very competitive. In the future, this can have a place with others esports.
Another's complete games, can be, for example "Skyrim", where you have an immersive world to explore, fight with other creatures, developed your own story... Maybe the graphics looks old, is true, but after the first hour of gameplay, you totally forget this matter. I remember the first time that I face the first dragon, it was pretty awesome.
We can talk about more game of this category, like "Farpoint" with the Aim controller, or EVE Valkyrie. There're a lot of game, and with the time, appear more and more. This means that the industry are wagering for this future.
What's next?
- Less wires, and less space to play with VR, with the HTC Vive, you need a lot of space to play comfortable and place the two cameras.
- Better resolution and graphics, actually they're good, but, with the time, we can expect more quality to reach the current realism in the games.
- Don't need the controllers to play, maybe a VR Headset with a neural link?
There're a few companies working about this, maybe the future is nearest than we think.
