We Live in the Pre-Future

The other day I was sipping on some probiotic soda and dishing out voice commands to my Xbox while reading an article on my phone when I realized something: we live in the pre-future.

Why the 'pre'?

It's because we're not there yet, where things are really crazy. It might sound like we'll always be on that cusp, that one could always say that we're about to be in the 'future', but I would argue that's not the case. So far, though anyone would tell you that these are speeding up, there hasn't been a point where we've begun to see the most outlandish things promised to us in science fiction.

Medical organizations and companies are now deeply invested in curing aging. Commercial space flights are not only here, but common and better than private organizations. VR and AR are here and better than ever. And tech is slowly worming it's way into our clothing, cars, buildings, and bodies.

But nothing feels like it's quite there yet. Humanity doesn't have any bases on other planets. The first honest-to-goodness anti-aging treatments aren't here yet. VR and AR are still way too expensive for your average consumers and don't offer enough to truly be worth it. And the internet of things still pretty much sucks except for some niche applications.

But in the next five or six years, we're going to start feeling this roller coaster ride that we're all on begin to accelerate. By 2025 the world will look substantially different, more different than it did 10 years ago.

Fortunes are going to be changed, the world is going to open up, borders will evaporate, and the skies will open. And, in my opinion, nothing encompasses the hope, the imagination, the resourcefulness, or the vision of the future like cryptocurrency.

This is a real shift in paradigm, and for those of us lucky enough to be positioned smack dab in the middle of it with even a little Steem, Bitcoin, Eos, or whatever the hell floats your boat are fortunate indeed.
