Prophecy is a gift from God: Or let them tell us what the future holds, so we can know what's going to happen
The Bible in the Book of Isaiah taught to us that prophecy is a gift from God. And it is for this spiritual gift that the servants of the Lord are recognized.
God manifested himself in the old testament working wonders and miracles, but also announcing what would happen, the Lord is not a god of the dead, but of the living: "Surely the Sovereign LORD does nothing without revealing his plan to his servants the prophets" Amos 3:7.
The prophet Isaiah in his second book taught to us that those who follow false gods and pagan idols cannot prophesy; idolatry in human beings comes from superstition and magical thinking, the Bible tells us about this: "But they supposed that either fire or wind or swift air, or the circle of the stars, or turbulent water, or the luminaries of heaven were the gods that rule the world" Wisdom 13:2.
The knowledge of the future only belongs to God, because only God is eternal, God exists from an eternal present and is outside of any notion of time; God owns the past, the present, and the future: "Who was it that made this happen? Who has determined the course of history? I, the LORD, was there at the beginning, and I, the LORD, will be there at the end" Isaiah 41:4. And he, the Lord, granted the knowledge of the future to his prophets to fulfill a specific spiritual purpose according to his plan of salvation.
In the second book of Isaiah, the returning Jews who had survived the captivity in Babylon had to be sustained in their trust in the Lord; and God in his wisdom, through the words of his faithful prophet, challenged the false Gods of Babylon, to show who was the true, mighty, and eternal God; only the true God can announce the future:
"´Present the case for your idols,´
says the LORD.
´Let them show what they can do,´
says the King of Israel.
´Let them try to tell us what happened long ago
so that we may consider the evidence.
Or let them tell us what the future holds,
so we can know what's going to happen.
Yes, tell us what will occur in the days ahead.
Then we will know you are gods" Isaiah 41:21-23.
