Why You Should be Watching HarmonQuest
Whether you are a total nerd who regularly plays Dungeons and Dragons (like me), or you have no interest in role-play, and think it is some stupid thing the kids at your high school did during lunch with their 20-sided dice, you should definitely be watching HarmonQuest
Isn't that the guy who made Rick and Morty?
You bet it is. Dan Harmon is a comedic genius. The improvisational tone of Rick and Morty is clearly seen throughout HarmonQuest (It is role-playing, after all). Harmon does not stop with his improv; he uses the same character development strategies that he uses for all his comedies to develop his fantasy character Fondue Zoobag as the game goes on, adding to both the comedic value and the depth of the story in the series.
So what's it all about?
I'm glad you asked. The show stars the Game Master (Spencer Crittenden) as he narrates, and controls, a story for three main adventurers: Fondue Zoobag (Dan Harmon), Beor O'Shift (Erin McGathy), Boneweevil (Jeff B. Davis), and a different guest star each episode, as they attempt to save their outcast-settled village from a cult trying to resurrect a powerful demon known as the Great Manticore. The series expertly combines comedic relief and action to make for the perfect role-playing game.
Sounds weird; why should I watch it?
That's exactly why you should watch it. It's incredibly unique. The dialogue and action happens as the stars speak it in front of a live audience, so there is no editing what they say or do. But the show isn't just watching these geeks talk around a table with dice; their choices and actions are animated (and well-animated at that) according to what they do, allowing the audience to visualize what exactly is going on, without breaking from the improvisation. No other show has managed to make me laugh and fanboy over fantasy stories (or even gotten close for that matter). The rules of the game played appear to be simplified, so no knowledge of fantasy gaming is required to enjoy the show!
