Nashi Pear
Every year, my landlord religiously waters his nashi pear tree.
Nashi pear (pyrus pyrifolia) is an East Asian pear tree known by many names, including: Asian pear, Chinese pear, Korean pear, Japanese pear, Taiwanese pear, apple pear, and sand pear.
The word "nashi" is a Japanese season word (kigo) used to describe late Autumn, which is when the fruit matures.
Because the flesh is crisp and grainy, the fruit of the Nashi pear is usually serve cut and peeled. Its main use is in vinegar- and soy sauce-based sauces as a sweetener replacing sugar.
