The $1.00 easy, delicious, and protein-filled breakfast for two.

Hi there! I call this very simple recipe "Mush". It may not be too visually appealing (and the name could use some work), but it sure is tasty and a great source of protein to start your day. And the best part is that it's super cheap and easy to make. Here are the ingredient and prices below. Please keep in mind that I live in Canada, so your prices for these ingredients might be different and are probably less because it's difficult for Canadians to grow food under feet of snow year round.

IngredientApprox. Cost (CAD)
One medium-sized potato, diced$0.20
Two mushrooms, diced$0.10
1/4 cup onion, diced$0.10
4 large eggs$0.50
1/2 tbsp butter$0.04
1/2 tbsp seasoned salt$0.06

Cooking instructions:

1)

First, dice up your ingredients and take a moment to capture it. Then realize you're chopping onions wrong. Upon realization of your inefficient dicing approach begin to cry. It may have been the chopping technique that brings tears to your eyes, or maybe you're crying because you just realized that those poor onions might have had a family that you just tore apart.

Next, place your 1/2 tbsp of butter in a pan on medium heat. Let the butter melt and then drown those onions in it as an insult to injury. You can also put the mushrooms in now if you like them to be filled with butter and taste nothing like mushrooms.

Now toss in your diced potatoes. Here I am using some frozen hash browns that I got on sale. On sale they cost just about the same as fresh potatoes and you can save the hassle of dicing them. Turn the heat up for a bit since they were frozen.

Once the potatoes have softened up add your seasoning (1/2-1 tbsp to taste) and mushrooms if you prefer to add them now. It'll look like there's a lot of seasoning at this stage, but that's because we haven't added the eggs. One time I forgot to check if I even had eggs before this stage so yes, I can confirm: It's too much seasoning without eggs. Let this cook up for a bit on medium-heat until the potatoes are just about done and getting crispy.

Now, you could go and dirty up a bowl to mix your 4 eggs. Or you can be lazy and push everything to one side of the pan and plop your four eggs on it. This technique is so the first and second egg you crack don't touch the pan and start to overcook.

The last step is to mix that shit up and then see why I call it Mush. Make sure you're continuously mixing and lightly scraping the egg off the bottom of the pan. If you scrape too hard and some Mush flies out and goes in between the crack of your oven and counter, just leave it, it's the next home owner's problem...

Plaowl and serve:

Mush is best eaten in a bowl, not a plate. But if you got a bowl that looks like a plate and you think you're a unique snowflake by calling it a Plaowl, then toss it in there, those things are great for messy dishes. Enjoy with a bit of ketchup or salsa if that's your thing, just be sure to taste it first.

Closing remarks:

You could also have this cost you nothing if you're insane and want to grow all the crops and raise chicken and then steal their unborn children from them, but hey that's up to you. Some times I'm also insane by adding extra veggies I have to this dish, I've even added broccoli and spinach before which is surprisingly good if you add a little bit more butter. You can also make this 10x better by adding sausage, but as you know meat can be expensive. If you find a good sale for sausage, just buy bulk and freeze it!

Thanks for checking this out! If there's interest in this I'll post more of my stupid recipes. Cheers!
