THE LIGHT AND THE DARKNESS (Short Story) (Fictional Horror/Monster Story)
As a creative project I took this photo of myself covered in mud and carrying a torch. I thought it turned out really good, so based off this photo I wrote this short story. This photo was very difficult to get because I used a 20 second self timer. That gave me just enough time to run up the creek and pose. It was raining at the time and very cold.
Here is my story, I hope you enjoy
PROLOGUE
February 3, 1985, somewhere in South America
"Hey Harry, are you sure you got your coodinates right?" Will says looking back at Harry in the passenger seat of their airplane.
Will and Harry are flying to a remote village on a mission trip carrying Bible's, food, medicine and supplies including ropes, pullies and oil for the mining workers that live in the village.
The mining equipment is all they were paid to bring, and the Bible's were their own idea.
They hated how the people in the village were treated and did not want to support the mining company, but at least when they are paid to be there they can help where it is needed.
"Sure Will. I know where I'm going. Can't you just trust me for once istead of second guessing me all the time?" Harry says to William a little petulantly.
"Fine Harry, don't get all pissef at me, just making sure is all" Will says a little hurt.
"Hey Harry?"
"What now Will?" says Harry
"Are you seeing what I'm seeing brother?"
Harry looks up from his compass and map to look out the cockpit windshield. As they were flying between two large mountains there was a black narly storm cloud forming in their flight path.
"Do you want to go around man?" Will says looking back at Harry.
"No, we don't have enough fuel to go around. We'll have to go through it" Harry says climbing up front to get a better view.
*Crack
*flash
*Crack
*flash
Lightning strikes in the storm forming before them. The clouds start swirling and growing darker. They are now entering the storm.
"You got this Will?" Harry says
"Ya, I got this, been through worse" Will responds
The sky before grows dark they can hardly see. The needle of the compass in Harry's hand starts spinning. The planes start to shake violently with turbulance.
*Crack
The plane is struck by the lightning. All the lights in the cockpit go off except the red flashing light of the dash
*beep *beep *beep
Will yells at Harry over the thunder in the storm "Harry buckle up we're g-" Then all goes black.
Will wakes up with the pitter patter of rain hitting steal. He opens his eyes and looks around, he is still in the cockpit of the plane. They crashed in the valley they were flying over.
He can't see Harry hardly see the dashboard in front of him, but he sees that all the light are off. The windshield is broken and there's tree limbs sticking through. He looks towards the rear of the plane and he can see that the tail was ripped off and he can see the rain hitting the mud behind the plane with the little amount of light coming from outside.
"Harry!" Will spots Harry lying unconscious in the mid section of the plane. "Harry wake up!"
The rain starts coming down harder.
"Aaaagh" Will feels horrendous pain strike his knee. "Aaaagh God!" Williams leg has been cut off below the knee by the the windshield when they crashed. Blood from the stub where his leg was removed is pouring out over the seat he is still strapped into. "Of shit Harry, oh shit" Will screams in pain. "Harry wake up! I think I'm dying man!" All he can think about is the pain.
He leans over and vomits onto the other passenger seat.
*Crunch
*Snap
"Who has woken me from my slumber" Will hears a slithering voice over the rain outside the plane. "I can smell blood"
Will looks outside the rear of the plane and sees glowing red eyes blazing over Harry. He can now see that Harry is covered in blood and dead.
He sees the hideous beast stick it's head into the rear of the plane. The beast is so tall it has to bend in half to see in the small plane. It stands like a man but with scales like iron and patchs of fur all over it's body. He sees green drule drip from it's yellow teeth as it grins. "I can smell the blood on you rodent" It says in that slimy voice.
The monster before him is covered in scars and looks very old. One eye is badly scarred as well as his belly and legs. He has one long scar on his belly that looks half healed and scabbed. He is truly hideous.
Will reaches down and unbuckles his seat belt, he falls and hits the floor of the plane.
"Aaagh" He yelles in anger and pain. He reaches for his belt knife not knowing what else to do. He grips his knife and props himself onto the side of his seat. He looks down and sees a Bible that had fallen to the floor from a broken crate. He grabs this and holds it to his chest, blood streaming down his arm and onto the white pages.
"Come and get me beast" Will says through the pain in his severed leg. His leg is now pouring blood down the floor of the plane and he is growing weaker. It was at this point he realized he was going to die.
The compass on the dash gets splattered in blood as it spins and spins, not know which way is north.
The supply pilots were never seen again. And there was no search for them because the mining operation they worked for was iligal. Their disapearence was never reported.
CHAPTER 1: TO KILL A MONSTER
His feet are cut along the bottom by the sharp rocks, blood pours from them and into the stream. One eye blackened from a tree branch. The warmth and light from his torch is his only comfort.
In the stream the skulls of the unlucky souls that found this coven stare back at Kirk with empty eyes. Bones litter the ground and rocks.
In this place all color seems to be a dream long lost.
Kirk stands there waiting to hear the approching footfalls of his nemisis.
The One that got the closest to defeating him.
The One that breaths fire and cuts with ice.
The One who brings famine and death.
The One who took so much from him. Took everything from him...
Kirk now feels the red burning eyes watching him. The One just waiting to make his presence known.
Kirk standing there, sweat pouring from his face and into his eyes. His feet covered in mud and blood dripping into his eye from a cut on his forehead.
*Crunch
*Snap
The smell is wretched and foul, burning the inside of his nose, it reaked of death centuries old.
Kirk can hear the slither of his enemy's tongue
"I can smell your blood fool." These words slither out of the Ones mouth. "I Can feel the fear inside your heart. You are weak, weak like your brother"
Kirk turns and looks up the hill. He is here. The One stands before him.
CHAPTER 2: DEATH WISH
Kirk gapes up at the monster before him. The horrendous filth that speaks in a slithering voice is more revolting then most brave men could bear.
"Do you know why I am here retch!?" Kirk yells at the beast before him. "Why I have come to your hiding place you filth!?"
The One tilts his head in query.
"Have you come to end your miserable existence like your brother before you fool?" He spits back at Kirk spraying him with green seliva.
"Aaaaaagghh!" Kirk yells swinging his fiery torch in anger lighting up the forest with orange color. "I am here to end you!" He screams in rage.
The creacher snarls and spits. "Defeat I? You fool. And how, you little worm, do you plan on defeating me, the darkness?"
The One steps forward into the creek and it flows over is feet and tail.
Kirk stood there, and slowly lifts his head grinning from ear to ear looking at the creek that was flowing with black oil. "The only way to defeat the darkness, to bring the light."
CHAPTER 3: THE DARKNESS
Kirk had placed a barrel of oil in the stream above that he got from the mining company in the valley.
The creacher looks at Kirk as Kirk waives the torch and shows that the creek was flowing with oil. The creacher takes a step back and falls deeper into the water and screams with anger.
Kirk jumps on to the large rock behind him and starts to climb the rope he placed there to the top. He had stuck the torch in his belt as he climbed and it was burning his skin and clothes. Halfway up the rope the creacher runs up and lunges. The One grabs his foot and tries to pull him down. Kirk grabs the torch out of his belt and jabs it at the monster igniting the oil on the monsters face. The creacher screams in agony as the fire spreads on his face. Kirk gags with the smell of burning flesh. The creacher gives one final pull at Kirk and Kirk loses his grib and they both fall.
CHAPTER 4: THE LIGHT
Kirk hit the ground landing on his left arm. "Aaaarrgh" he screams as his shoulder breaks.
He lyes their with unbearable pain ripping through his nerves. He screams again.
"This is it, end it" he says to himself.
He fears the end, although all along he knew this was the only way. Darkness always takes it's price.
He put his right hand on the rock below him and pushes himself up onto his knees. He looks around to see the beast of this hell stand up and turn towards him. The monsters face was alight with fire, flames ripping the branches of the tree's above him. He swings his paw over his head and blows out the flame.
Kirk looked around and found the torch. It was completely out.
The One looked at him dead in the eyes. "Ha Ha Ha. What is your plan now worm? Your death approuchs. Your end is here. I will decorate my land with your bones like that of your brother"
Kirk reaches into his pocket and pulls out a match. "My end is here. But so is yours." Kirk strikes the match on the rock igniting it. He holds up the lit match and stares into the flame accepting the end.
"No!" The beast yells as Kirk throws the match into the oil igniting the oil and lighting the whole coven. The beast runs at Kirk and Kirk jumps at him grabbing his face and pulling him into the fire sending them both into the flames.
EPILOGUE
He's dead. This is the life beyond. He has killed the beast and he died as well.
But if he's dead why is he choking for air.
"Hagh hagh" Kirk coughs. He's alive. But how. He reaches out and touchs the wall of his tomb and his hands are covered in slime that burns his skin. He coughs again. Air is running out. He remembers now, he knows where he is.
He is covered in a slimy cave of flesh.
He reaches for his belt knife and unsheaths it. He jabs the knife into the flesh incasing him and starts cutting at it. He rips the flesh away with his knife and tears at the meat. As he coughs for air he finally cuts his way out and puts his head through the hole he cut. He pulls himself out of the monsters stomach. The beast had swallowed him whole. The beast had saved his life.
He looks around the valley and sees the wrath of the fire he started. All the plants were scorched and the tree's had all burned.
He wiped the sweat and slime from his eyes and looked upon the warm sun. The fire had burned the tree cover blocking out the sun
The heat from the sun filled him with passion. It seemed to fill his soul with joy.
Color bursted with vibrence around him in the valley as the sun hit it for the first time in centuries.
The beast centuries old that haunted this land was finally lying defeated on the valley floor and Kirk rejoiced.
Kirk made his way down the trail to the old mining company. From there he got a ride on an outgoing supply truck to the local town.
The day that Kirk was flighted out of the South American rain forest was September 8, 1984. 4 months before Harry and Will prepare for their last trip through South America. The Beast lives...
