Powerful Speech 008 - Charlie Chaplin The great dictator 1940

in #freedom7 years ago (edited)

With this post I started a series of speeches of important for me people that have helped me forge the values that I carry.

Today's choice is one of the greatest actors of all time Charlie Chaplin, he is a favorite of mine. He is mainly known for his silent movies, however, whenever he spoke he always left an eternal mark.

Besides being incredibly talented, funny, clever and a freedom fighter, he also composed the music, wrote the scripts, directed, edited and produced most of the movies he starred in.

Please enjoy one of the greatest speeches in movie history on Dtube and written below.

I'm sorry, but I don't want to be an Emperor - that's not my business. I don't want to rule or conquer anyone. I should like to help everyone, if possible -Jew, gentile, black man, white. We all want to help one another; human beings are like that. We want to live by each other's happiness, not by each other's misery. We don't want to hate and despise one another. In this world there's room for everyone and the good earth is rich and can provide for everyone.

The way of life can be free and beautiful.

But we have lost the way.

Greed has poisoned men's souls, has barricaded the world with hate, has goose-stepped us into misery and bloodshed. We have developed speed but we have shut ourselves in. Machinery that gives abundance has left us in want. Our knowledge has made us cynical, our cleverness hard and unkind. We think too much and feel too little. More than machinery, we need humanity. More than cleverness, we need kindness and gentleness. Without these qualities, life will be violent and all will be lost.

The airplane and the radio have brought us closer together. The very nature of these inventions cries out for the goodness in men, cries out for universal brotherhood for the unity of us all. Even now my voice is reaching millions throughout the world, millions of despairing men, women, and little children, victims of a system that makes men torture and imprison innocent people.

To those who can hear me I say, "Do not despair." The misery that is now upon us is but the passing of greed, the bitterness of men who fear the way of human progress. The hate of men will pass and dictators die; and the power they took from the people will return to the people and so long as men die, liberty will never perish.

Soldiers: Don't give yourselves to brutes, men who despise you, enslave you, who regiment your lives, tell you what to do, what to think and what to feel; who drill you, diet you, treat you like cattle, use you as cannon fodder. Don't give yourselves to these unnatural men, machine men, with machine minds and machine hearts! You are not machines! You are not cattle! You are men! You have the love of humanity in your hearts. You don't hate; only the unloved hate, the unloved and the unnatural.

Soldiers: Don't fight for slavery! Fight for liberty! In the seventeenth chapter of Saint Luke it is written, "the kingdom of God is within man" -- not one man, nor a group of men, but in all men, in you, you the people have the power, the power to create machines, the power to create happiness. You the people have the power to make this life free and beautiful, to make this life a wonderful adventure.

Then, in the name of democracy, let us use that power! Let us all unite!! Let us fight for a new world, a decent world that will give men a chance to work, that will give you the future and old age a security. By the promise of these things, brutes have risen to power, but they lie! They do not fulfill their promise; they never will. Dictators free themselves, but they enslave the people!! Now, let us fight to fulfill that promise!! Let us fight to free the world, to do away with national barriers, to do away with greed, with hate and intolerance. Let us fight for a world of reason, a world where science and progress will lead to all men's happiness.

Soldiers: In the name of democracy, let us all unite!!!

Hannah, can you hear me? Wherever you are, look up, Hannah. The clouds are lifting. The sun is breaking through. We are coming out of the darkness into the light. We are coming into a new world, a kindlier world, where men will rise above their hate, their greed and brutality.

@sophia1000. I just wanna say that is my favorite speech of all time. Because you shared that i dont feel like i dont need to know anything else about you to want to follow you. If that speech speaks to you then you speak to me. But seriously its a shame it is ficticious. If we are to be governed at all let it be by those of virtue. They would have to remove the dollar( and by extension greed) from the campaign process.

@fr3q Thank's for the comment, comments like this one are written with feelings, very much appreciated. From the way you write I can see that you have meaningful things to say. I saw that we have many common hobbies so I followed you, cannot wait to read a post from you :) I just do not enjoy being governed so that part is not for me :D I do only joyful things :)

Bear with me for i am just getting started. You speak with conviction as well. Im going to love it here. I look forward to more from you.:)

I am practicing my patience so take your time :)

This is truly a powerful speech. I read and read it again. Charlie was indeed a great man. Thank you for bringing him alive! @sofia.

Thank you very much, sir :) and thank you for the resteem. I have many friends from Nigeria in the real life so I am glad to have here too :) no wahala

My favorite speech! This one makes my heart overflow. It makes me feel like we as people do mot demand enough from those who demand so much from us. We settle to easily for lies. This was written in the 30's but has not improved any. :(

I get the chills every time I hear it :) not only it hasn't improved but it has gotten a lot worst in my opinion. Tnx for the nice comment :)

I love this post Brilliant man

Thank You @m-khan :) You have some good photography it looks made from the hearth.

Very powerful speech!

Thank You Brothare :D

Charlie Chaplin is basically the best actor of all time. I remember when I was little I used to watch his silent films and they were really funny. Recently I was going to watch "The Great Dictator" because I've watched this speech a thousand times and it has always made me feel a strange feeling from inside... but I didn't have the opportunity. For sure I'll watch it these days.
You are continuing to amaze me with these series! These people are great role models(eventhough I don't like "imitation") and can make you think about the world we live in.

Gera as always thanks for the great comment buddy :) You shouldn't see it as an imitation in your case I believe that the proper word should be inspiration :) I can tell a mile away that you are an independent thinker :)

Yup, "inspiration" sounds much better. :) I used quotes because I didn't find the right word. And call me Gero xD for short because Gera sounds russian.

Gero is cool sounds like geroi :)

I've always loved this speech. Such a dream for a utopia and a criticism on our current culture. And spoken by a man who was known for being silent.

I was literally listening to the speech earlier today, it's so moving.

hey @thedlk, It is moving indeed, I have goosebumps every time I hear it. I listen to this speech on a weekly base at least :) It inspires me to hear my point of view shared from Charli Chaplin :)

Now I'm motivated. I don't know what I'm motivated to do but I'm sure about to get it done!

@luckythebard That's the spirit do everything with motivation, something good will come out certainly ;)

Love this clip! Chaplin was awesome. I love him dancing with the globe balloon also!
