FREE, INDESTRUCTIBLE, INTERCHANGEABLE RAISED BEDS

in #free6 years ago

Free is my favorite price, and indestructible sounds good too!

Rocks, rocks, and more rocks. Yes, we've got more than our fair share around here. However, I like to view them as a resource rather than a problem. That said, I now have free material for making my raised beds, without having to purchase lumber or metal. Moreover, unlike wood which can rot or metal which can rust, my rocks are basically indestructible. To top it all off, I can easily change the shape of any of my beds just by moving a few rocks, and I can even make them deeper just by adding another layer. Yup, these should work out just fine for me!

Rocks are the biggest bumper crop at my parents' place. Some have been repurposed to line flower beds, but most are in a giant pile behind their garden. Frankly, I'm astonished the plot hasn't sunk below grade with all the material we've removed over the years.

A true labor of love.

I was following a uTuber and mentioned this idea to him. He was concerned about slugs. But, I told him there would probably be easy ways to solve the slug problem and using all the rocks he was stacking up would solve the problem of what to do with them.

I need to remember who that was and see if he made progress on his homestead.

Interesting. I hadn't had any slug issues last years.

Grind egg shells into a powder and spread it in the bed. It will stick to the slugs and they will not be able to move, thus dying.

I did a search. The guy's channel is Off Grid Build. Looks like he hasn't posted anything in 7 months. He was doing regular videos, but I guess life happened. So, I don't know if he went through with using the rocks for raised beds. I think I made the comment on one of his videos from 2 years ago. Being in NY, he might have more slugs than you do.

Anyway, I always thought that if you have the rocks lying around, it would be a better method than using wood.

You might get a few slugs but the rocks would create good homes for the critters that eat the slugs too. I have found that the first year after adding mulch, rocks, wood, etc. I tend to see some slugs but then I start to see a lot of black ground beetles, centipedes, and garter snakes. All of those critters eat slugs or their eggs. The result has been less slugs where I add those natural features compared to areas where I have not. I'm in western WA - we have tons of slugs over here!

This is the way I would like to build raised beds. In the suburbs it is a bit harder to find rocks, because I can't just dig holes everywhere to find them. Wonder if building sites ever dump rocks for junk, or maybe they usually get sold to the quarries, to sell back to landscapers. Big boulders can fetch a high price by the pound.

Yeah, rocks can be hard to come by some places, and busted up concrete doesn't look as nice.

We've got plans to do something similar here as well. :D Great minds think alike. :D
God bless you and your wonderful family. :D Have an awesome day my fabulous friend! :D

That's a lot of mulch, glad you pointed that out as your "raised" beds didn't seem very raised!

They'll be getting deeper over time, and I figured I should point that out.

Yes Sir, that is Arkansas rock alright. I can't wait to see how many rocks I have to dig up when it comes time for me to start our new garden when we move to the other side of the property. Stay stocked up on picks. Minecraft the REAL game!

Those beds look good! I'm afraid there are no rocks on my homestead - just a bunch of clay. But I did find a free source of fresh Douglas fir logs that I was able to get. Got 3 pickup truck loads for free! I'm going to be building a series of raised beds using those as soon as the snow goes away!

I love hot chillies. Thumbs up!
