Phreeet! - Sent Off !! Out out out! Go Out!

During the early world cup, referee tends to whistle & verbally communicate their caution or sent-off to the players if there is any fouls. World Cup being international arena, where players are from different part of the world with no one common language, it was a big challenge for the referees. However, the need to penalize fouled players was been already in practice from the Fifa World Cup 1930 despite the language limitation.

The first ever verbal red card used in World Cup was to sent off the (C)aptain of Peru, Plácido Galindo at the 70' minute of first round stage match against Romania during 1930 Fifa World Cup, Uruguay. Peru suffered a 3-1 loss, in which 2 goals conceded after the sent off. Throughout the tournament it was the only sent off.

Emre markos from Hungary is the second player to be sent off during 1936 Fifa World Cup, Italy against Austria. It was also the only sent off throughout the tournament.

Number of fouls and sent-off started to increase, until World War II put hold to World Cup.

After the World War II violence settles the World Cup tournament resumed with Fifa World Cup 1950, Brazil, in which there were no sent-off throughout the tournament.

During the final match, Brazil was defeated by Uruguay in front of 200,000 supporters at Maracanã stadium in the 1950 World Cup. ( Watch: Final - Brazil 1:2 Uruguay)

Number of sent-off started to pick up again till, 1970. Total of 5 sent-off happened during Fifa World Cup 1966, England.

Birth of Red Card

The raise in fouls and fault news has demanded a better way to reflect referee's intentions at once to all the players, team members , audience and mass media to avoid any misconception.

Ken Aston, an English referee & Chairman of Referees' Committee realized the necessity of a system punishing players. Inspired form traffic light, he invented the Red Card to indicate Sent Off & Yellow Card to caution the players.

The physical red card was introduced in Fifa World Cup 1970, Mexico. Unfortunately throughout the tournament the red card was not flashed, however the yellow card was put to good use. 😛

Carlos Caszely became the first player to be sent off using the red card after he took down West Germany player with a flying kick out of frustration. ( Watch: Carlos Caszely Red Card)

The title for fastest red card goes to Uruguay’s Sergio Batista, who in 1986 committed a tackle only 56 seconds into Uruguay’s game against Scotland.( Watch: Carlos Caszely Red Card)

Then onward Fifa World Cup tournament's number of red card kept on increasing . The number of red card flashed had a whooping increase during the ** Fifa World Cup 1990**, Italy with a total of 16 Red Cards and with a first time World Cup Final sent off. The final won by West Germany against 9 players Argentina after Pedro Monzon and Gustavo Dezotti received red card.

The first keeper to be sent off in a FIFA World Cup match was the Italian keeper Gianluca Pagliuca during FIFA World Cup 1994. He was sent off for handling a ball outside the box. The card was a straight red.

Red Card Records

The number of red cards kept on increasing, with now the record of most red card flashed during World Cup tournament is 28 red cards during Fifa World Cup 06, Germany. Which includes the controversial headbutt during Fifa World Cup final by Zinedine Zidane, captain of France, being provoked by Italian midfielder Materazzi. Both of them are the goalscorers putting France & Italy at a draw 1-1, that forced the game into additional 30 minutes, during when Zidane blows a headbutt to Materazzi chest . Finally, Italy claimed their championship by beating France in penalty shoot-out.

During Fifa World Cup 06, Germany the second round showdown between Portugal and Netherlands set an individual record for most red cards handed out in a single match and the game is known as “Battle of Nuremberg.”

The rise in the number of red cards flashed is always been a subject of debate is it either the mentality to win has contributed to increase in aggressiveness or because FIFA has stricter rules now compare to past tournaments...

Awaiting for FIFA World Cup 2018, Russia!!
