Ready, Set, Hut!

This week, I was graciously invited to tour the Washington Redskin’s practice facility and to meet Rob Kelley. For those that do not know him, Rob is the starting running back of the Washington Redskins and is doing a heck of a job this season both on and off the field. From my observation, Rob is a young man that has his head on straight and has a bright future ahead of him.
During my visit to Redskin’s Park, I spent some time talking to Rob on various topics and the topic of “success” came up. From that discussion, I was able to identify Rob’s three keys to success:

Finding a mentor: Rob had a couple of coaches at his college that provided him wisdom both on and off the field. He was able to leverage their knowledge and past experiences to avoid the traditional pitfalls college athlete’s face. As the saying goes, “Getting a mentor is the shortcut to success”.

Surround yourself with good people: Rob had established a good nucleus of friends early on and these people had his back during the good and bad times. There were occasions that Rob felt frustrated with his current NFL future but was re-invigorated by the support of his closest friends and confidants. Remember, you are the average of your five closest friends.

Dedication to hard work: Rob continued to work hard even when he was an undrafted rookie in the NFL. At the beginning of the season, he was way down on the running back depth chart but kept on pushing himself to become better. After a couple of injuries occurred to running backs on his team, he seized the moment and has never relented. The door was open for him, but he kicked the door down. (Hard work + Dedication + Consistency = Success)

So there you have it. Three things that you can do to successfully change the trajectory of your life. These things do not require any special abilities nor for you to be a member of Mensa.
