This is a typical Singaporean breakfast and coffee (kopi)
The typical Australian breakfast includes your bacon, sausages, toast, eggs in various forms, hash browns, mushrooms, baked tomatoes, baked beans etc
So what does a popular breakfast in Singapore look like?
This would include additions such as kaya on toast or peanut butter on toast with kopi for less than $5 a set. (Ok there are many other dishes such as noodles, congee, steamed buns...)
Kopi is the super strong local coffee. There are over 3000 local kopi shops on Singapore where you can get your caffeine fix for as little as $0.80c!
If you didn’t grow up with the stuff it can be confusing to order your coffee. Thankfully some stores have signboards to help us out.
Kopi is pronounced ‘kaw-pee’
Elsewhere there are stores that sell plates describing the different kopi variants as souvenirs.
Here are some typical orders:
- Kopi-o: black, with sugar
- Kopi-c: coffee with unsweetened evaporated milk
- Kopi-kah-c: extra sweet with condensed milk and evaporated milk
- Kopi-kosong: black, no sugar
- Kopi peng: sweet white coffee with ice
- Kopi-o peng: sweet black coffee with ice
Next time you’re in a Singapore, give it a shot!
