levelling up: gone is the butane and in it’s place we are now cooking with induction electric!

in #food8 years ago

for the past three years i’ve been using butane gas to cook my food, it’s a horrid gas, gives ya headaches if you don’t ventilate your space properly and every time i buy those four cans for around five quid i feel like i’m contributing to a bigger problem, also now that i have the new electric induction cooker i find this. erm, ok then. glad i’m not using it then. i’ll probably pick up some in case of an electrical power cut so i have a backup but i’m glad to be ‘off that stuff’

Butane is regarded as one of the more harmful volatile substances to inhale. Butane gas can cause what is known as 'sudden sniffing death', which occurs as a result of cardiac arrhythmia/arrest if the person is stressed or does heavy exercise during or soon after using.

anyway, let me get this straight from the get go. cooking on induction feels like you have a star trek replicator, you can only use certain pans with it and it ‘knows’ if it’s a pan it can heat or not, you need a special kind of connection and metal for it to work, means a little bit of investment in other pans if they don’t work. thankfully i’ve got a few high quality japanese pots and pans i bought when i first had the van. they are solid and work really well, so well in fact at first i didn’t know how to handle all the power - this hotplate beast has like ten electronic levels. it’s super bad ass.

i’m used to making my daily breakfast burritos with scrambled eggs and obviously without a frying pan that works for induction right now i’ve had to adapt which is fine because i love poached eggs anyway when they are right. this thing is PERFECT for poached eggs - one setting to boil the water and then a manual setting to kinda plus the heat which is cool because it kinda flips the poached eggs in the bowl, i had the most perfect three poached eggs this morning with some pepper and some himalayan pink rock salt. damn they were good, so good i had to share! :)

i’ve still gotta get another pan (or two) and do a bit more experimenting but it’s got presets for milk, stewing, stir fry (which i think it’s gonna be legit at), deep fry (scary) and that boiling water setting. i can totally see me making regular hot chocolate for the girl(s) on this beast. honestly it feels so good to be able to remove the background ‘process’ of worrying about getting gas to be able to eat. things had gotten really dark for me at the start of the year with work and it came down to not only how i would eat but what depending on the ability to cook it. i’m thankful for progress and i make a point of reflecting on it because it feels like a little progress.
