[WHISKY] All About Scotch, The Scotch Whisky Experience

Today, we celebrate the International Whisk(e)y day, in the memory of Michael Jackson, world-famous author of books related to whisky. The event is celebrated on Jackson's birthday, March 27th, and publicly supports Parkinsons Disease research, the disease that Jackson suffered for at least a decade. On this day, I will take you on a tour through The Scotch Whisky Experience.

Scotch Whisky is easily one of the first things that come to mind when Scotland is mentioned. Whisky is one of the major exports of Scotland, acclaimed for its high quality and characteristics. On the Royal Mile, heading toward Edinburgh Castle, you can find the Scotch Whisky Experience, place where you can learn all about Scotch Whisky.

오늘은 세계 위스키 데이입니다. 유명 위스키 평론가이자 저자인 마이클 잭슨을 기리는 마음에 시작된 날로, 그의 생일인 3월 27일을 기립니다. 이 날은 단순히 위스키를 마시는 날이 아닌, 잭슨이 마지막에 오랜시간 고통받았던 파킨슨병 연구에 기부를 하기도 하죠. 이러한 오늘, 에든버러의 스카치 위스키 익스피리언스의 투어를 함께 할까 합니다.

스코틀랜드 하면 가장 먼저 떠오르는 것은 당연히 스카치 위스키일 겁니다. 스코틀랜드에서 가장 큰 비중을 차지하는 수출품 중 하나이기도 하며 좋은 품질과 맛으로 많은 사랑을 받고 있기 때문이죠. 에든버러 캐슬로 올라가는 로열 마일에는 그러한 스카치 위스키의 위상을 살펴볼 수 있는 곳이 있는데, 바로 스카치 위스키 익스피리언스 (The Scotch Whisky Experience)가 그곳입니다.

The Scotch Whisky Experience consists of three areas. First is the tourist area, and another is Amber, bar/restaurant in the basement. The last one is the Scotch Whisky Shop, where you can buy wide range of single malt and blended Scotch Whiskies. There are also meeting rooms and other areas exclusively for members.

스카치 위스키 익스피리언스에는 기본적으로 세 공간이 있는데, 바로 스카치 위스키 익스피리언스 투어를 즐길 수 있는 곳과 앰버라고 하는 지하의 바 겸 레스토랑, 그리고 다양한 종류의 싱글몰트와 블렌디드 스카치 위스키를 구매할 수 있는 스카치 위스키 숍이 바로 그곳입니다. 이 외에도 멤버들을 위한 공간도 있지만 그곳은 쉽게 갈 수 없으니... 일단 스카치 위스키 익스피리언스 투어를 시작했습니다.

There are numerous types of tours from Silver, Gold, Platinum, Morning Master, Taste of Scotland and many others. The casual tour that happens on hourly basis is Silver and Gold tour, with the difference being the number of whisky one can try. Silver tour gets to try only one while Gold tour can try five different whiskies from each region of Scotland. Morning Master happens in the morning and Platinum at night, Taste of Scotland includes dinner in the package.

투어는 실버와 골드, 플랜티넘과 모닝 마스터, 테이스트 오브 스코틀랜드 코스 등이 있습니다. 그중 가장 가볍게 들을 수 있는 것은 실버와 골드 투어인데, 실버의 경우 한 잔의 위스키 테이스팅만 할 수 있고, 골드는 총 다섯 잔의 위스키 테이스팅과 스카치 위스키 클럽에 가입할 수 있는 티켓을 줍니다. 모닝은 아침, 플랜티넘은 저녁 코스이고 테이스트 오브 스코틀랜드는 식사까지 포함된 투어입니다.

Tour starts with taking a cask looking ride throughout the process of whisky production. The ride was really impressive, reminding me of a ride that I took when I visited Heineken Beer factory in Amsterdam. The ride had Korean support, showing increased interest and demand for Scotch Whisky in Korea.

처음 투어를 시작하면 오크통처럼 생긴 라이드를 타고서는 위스키의 생산 과정에 대한 설명을 시각적 효과와 함께 즐겁게 배울 수 있는데, 하이네켄 공장에 갔을 때 체험한 라이드가 떠오를 정도로 굉장히 잘 만들었습니다. 심지어 한국어 지원까지 한다는 사실! 그만큼 한국에서도 스카치 위스키에 대한 관심과 수요가 많이 높다는 것을 뜻하겠죠.

The tour was followed by an amazing video that introduces each region where Scotland's whisky is produced. The clip not only captured the characteristics of each region, but they also captured the amazing beauty of Scotland's nature. Another interesting thing was an aroma scratch card, that showed distinctive characteristics of each region whisky. From these small details, I could feel how much effort they put into the place.

그 뒤에 이어진 어마어마한 크기의 압도적인 영상은 단순히 스코틀랜드 각 지역의 위스키의 특색 뿐만 아니라 스코틀랜드의 자연 경관을 감탄이 나올 정도로 잘 소개했습니다. 거기에 더해 향이 나는 스크래치 카드에는 각 지역의 위스키 특색이 잘 묻어져 나와서 사소한 것 하나하나에도 많은 관심을 쏟았다는 것을 느낄 수 있었네요.

When we took a seat at our place, we heard an extra explanation about each whisky and was able to decide our whisky. There was a hologram that was located in front of the table and it was simply impressive.

그리고 각자의 자리에 앉아 위스키에 대한 추가적인 설명과 함께 어떤 위스키를 마실 것인지 선택할 수 있었는데요, 앞에 자리 잡은 홀로그램은 정말 간단하면서도 신기해서 자꾸만 보게 되더군요.

With the whisky I chose, we entered the room where world's largest Scotch Whisky Collection rests. I couldn't help myself from just staring at all these beauties. The collection first started off from a Brazilian whisky enthusiast Claive Vidiz, who gained a reputation for his whisky collection. After his death, Diageo purchased the collection and kept on growing the collection by adding newly released whisky into it. There were so many old bottles that I've only heard of, and had to wonder if I'll have any chance of trying the whiskies in the collection.

그렇게 선택한 위스키를 들고 입장한 세계 최대의 스카치 위스키 컬렉션. 들어서면서 그저 입이 쩍 벌어졌습니다. 브라질의 Claive Vidiz라는 위스키 애호가가 모으던 위스키 컬렉션을 인수하여 이후에는 생산되는 모든 스카치 위스키는 한 병씩 보관된다고 하는데, 말로만 듣던 올드 보틀도 많고, 처음 보는 위스키도 수두룩 한 곳이었습니다. 살면서 여기에 있는 저 위스키를 맛볼 수나 있을까... 싶었던 곳.

With the world's largest Scotch Whisky collection, the tour ends. Those who took Gold Tour gets to try their whisky flight of four whiskies at this bar. They also have a very large range of Scotch whisky at a fairly reasonable price, so it is always welcomed to seat at the table and do some tasting of different whiskies.

이렇게 세계 최대의 스카치 위스키 컬렉션을 마지막으로 정식 투어는 끝이 나고, 여기에 있는 바에서 골드 투어를 신청한 사람은 추가 위스키 네 잔을 시음할 수 있습니다. 아니면 다양한 위스키도 판매를 하고 있기에 본인이 원하는 위스키를 골라서 맛을 볼 수도 있고요. 한국에 정식으로 수입되지 않은 위스키도 많고, 무엇보다도 한국에 비해 무척이나 저렴한 가격 때문에 일단 자리에 앉아 위스키를 주문했습니다.

The first two dram I ordered were Glenfiddich limited IPA and XX. Glenfiddich IPA was a whisky that finished in a cask that stored IPA beer, and Project XX was blending of twenty different casks each chosen by the brand ambassadors from all over the world. I personally enjoyed Project XX much more. I also had Port cask finish Talisker and the world's peatiest whisky, Octomore, and on top of these, four whiskies from Highland, Lowland, Speyside and Islay, making me tipsy at the end of all the drams.

처음 주문했던 두 잔은 글렌피딕의 한정판 IPA와 XX 두 종류. IPA의 경우 IPA 맥주를 보관했던 오크통에 숙성시킨 위스키이고, XX의 경우 스무 명의 위스키 관계자가 선택한 오크통에 숙성시킨 위스키를 블렌딩했다고 합니다. 개인적으로는 XX가 더 맛있었더군요. 그리고 포트 캐스크 피니쉬를 한 탈리스커와 피트함의 대명사인 옥토모어까지. 거기에 더해 골드 투어의 하이랜드와 로우랜드, 아일레이와 스페이사이드 위스키 네 종을 테이스팅을 하니 대낮부터 알딸딸하게 좋았습니다.

If you already enjoy your Scotch whisky, this is the closest one can get to heaven. If you have vague interest in whisky and want to learn more about it, you are more than welcomed here. The Scotch Whisky Experience is more than worth every pound you spend, and I highly recommend this place if you are visiting Edinburgh.
