Oats.. A great slow energy releaser and.... as you say VERY cheap! Also at this time of year (Jul - Sep) you can always forage some berries, such as blackberries and add them in for free.
I sometimes have this, but without milk, just boiling water, oats and a light sprinkling of sugar...
