Blue Apron - making of Basque-Style Cod

Previously...

I wrote previously about getting a gift of "Blue Apron" meals from my kids. And then I wrote about receiving, unboxing and the making my first Blue Apron meal.

Making Basque-Style Cod

So here is the meal guide for the second Blue Apron meal I chose to prepare.

And here are the ingredients as shipped, all laid out and ready to go.

And here is a picture of the flip side of the meal card illustrating the instructions for making the meal.

I like their instructions. They are written in a manner that is concise and which also takes into account the lull periods of cooking, such as the 22+ minutes of time that it took to cook the Freekeh. The style of writing does take some getting used to -- something time will cure.

Some interesting ingredients were included. I had never heard of Freekeh before reading the instructions. What an interesting food with a very distinctive taste. Then there is the Espelette pepper which lent a very nice flavor to the dish. Yummy!

I wished I had had a strainer as called for in the instructions. As it was, I took probably an extra three minutes to drain the water from the Freekeh after cooking using the cocked lid maneuver while draining.

An interesting thing I noted while cooking the Freekeh was that it left what looked like tiny charcoal bits lining the pot wall just above the boiling water line. I am guessing that this resulted from the process used to produce the Freekeh.

I didn't cook the pepper/onion sauce down as much as I probably should have. Had I done so, perhaps the plated food would have looked nicer. Don't think it mattered though because it was still damn good.

Time to eat!

The plated food images that Blue Apron produces make this meal look better than I do in this image. But rest assured, it definitely tasted as good as their perfect image represents!

By the way, there were NO leftover parts to this meal assembly. That is a good thing, right?

Conclusion

I still like Blue Apron a lot after this meal. I look forward to re-heating this meal for dinner tonight!!

Blue Apron has outdone itself. Great way to assist us non-chefs on how to cook. They provide all the ingredients and detailed instructions on preparation. With a bit of magic, voila you are ready to eat a great meal!

In hindsight, their model seems obvious doesn't it?
