Hot cocoa (aka hot chocolate) is a delicious, decadent yet qucik and easy-to-make autumn or winter treat.

Ingredients

  • 2 Tablespoons sifted cocoa powder
  • 1 - 2 Tablespoons sugar
  • a pinch of pink or sea salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon vanilla
  • 1 cup + 2 Tablespoons mylk (I prefer soy or coconut)
Keep in mind that some mylk is already sweetened or has vanilla.

The caffeine content in a tablespoon of cocoa is about 8mg, so a drink like this has about 16mg of caffeine. How does that compare to other drinks? A cup of green tea has about 25-50mg, a can of coca-cola has 34mg, black tea has about 50-100mg, coffee has 100+mg, and a litre of coca-cola has almost 100mg. The amount of caffeine isn't the only thing to think about in beverages. For example, the caffeine in coca-cola is synthetic, and different teas and beans have different compounds therefore different synergystic effects.

Hot cocoa is a good way to reduce caffeine intake but still indulge. As long as you're using healthy milk and don't add too much sugar, it's a pretty healthy treat.
