THE HAWAIIAN PAPAYA HAS POTENTIAL AS A FOOD INGREDIENT
On a pilot scale at the USDA's Pacific Rim Agricultural Research Center, and in collaboration with the University of Hawaii Hilo, researchers were able to demonstrate that papaya could be used successfully as a raw material for algae, Chlorella protothecoides. The final products of his demonstration-scale work were seaweed oil, which can be used as a biofuel, and algae meal, which has the potential to be used as an ingredient in animal feed.

Other researchers from the University of Hawaii Hilo College of Agriculture, Forestry and Natural Resources Management (CAFNRM) have recently published a document that demonstrates the environmental benefits of growing marine microalgae and wood on lands where soy was previously grown. Wood provides the power and carbon dioxide for the algae, and the algal biomass produces about the same amount of high quality protein as the soybean crop.
