A DOGS BLOG - HOMEMADE CHICKEN, VEG AND PEANUT BUTTER TREATS
Its a dogs life ! I've been sitting here for 2 hrs now waiting for my mum to give me some of that lovely smelling food - my mouth is drooling and my nose is just bursting with the aroma....
I've been promised some new healthy snacks, instead of the 'commercial rubbish' (her words) that is on offer at the shops here - so I am trying to be patience and not 'howl' too much, but really my tummy is just growling with excitement.
WHATS IN OUR NEW TREATS:- What health benefits are there.
Broccoli - green and healthy veg good for my bones my mum says- but only in small amounts, otherwise TOO MUCH can be toxic - so i only have this once a week
Cauliflower - this has Vitamins A and K which are great for me - but too much cauliflower makes us both a little 'Windy' and then we are sent out ! - but the good news is that its low in calories.
Carrots - these are good for my eyes, especially when I bury things and I need to find that smelly bone again.again this vegetable is low in calories and high in fiber and vitamins. Raw carrots are also good for my teeth, especially after I find that bone!!
Peanut Butter - mmmm our favourite - makes my 'coat' shine, but we are limited on how much we are allowed, too much again is toxic for us, becauseof the type of sugar used in its making, the sweetener that’s been used to replace the sugar is called xylitol and this is not good for us dogs. Again, we only have this on special occasions.
Wheatgerm - yes Wheatgerm, this is the good stuff for dogs - apparently Wheatgerm has lots of healthy benefits when we eat it. It gives LILLY AND ME lots of energy, supports physical and mental performance on a daily basis; because its a natural product it has vitamin E and omega-3 and -6 fatty acids that make our coats shiny, soft and healthy hydrated skin. All the better for stroking me and making a fuss!
CHICKEN, VEG AND PEANUT BUTTER TREATS
TO MAKE YOU WILL NEED:
2 florets of cookedBroccoli - chopped up small
2 florets of cooked Cauliflower ( I used up the cauliflower cheese I had left )- chopped down small
1/2 chopped up cooked carrot
1 tbsp Peanut butter - crunch or smooth
1 tbsp Wheat Germ
2 eggs - organic /free range
1 tbsp virgin olive oil
1 cup oats
1 cup refined flour or wholewheat flour
1-2 oz left over chicken - (I stripped the underside of the chicken ) - chopped into small pieces
1 Veg or Chicken stock cube - crumbled
little milk if needed.
TO MAKE:
Turn on the oven high
butter a baking tray or line with grease proof-paper
Meanwhile in a large bowl/processor put the flour, oats, crumble stock cube into a bowl and mix together.
Make a well in the middle - add the eggs, and all the other ingredients.
Mix well until dough like - if looking a little dry, add a little milk
if looking to wet - add some more flour until doughy.
Empty the dough out on to a floured top/board - roll out until 1/2 inch thick.
If you have pastry cutters/shapes - now is the time to cut out
Put the 'biscuits' on to the baking tray and bake for approx 20-25 minutes. Check to see if cooked through, if a little soft in the middle - cook for a further 5 minutes. It should resemble a 'cookie'
If cooked as a whole biscuit as I did ( no pastry cutters yet !) - allow it to cool down, then cut into oblong pieces .
BON APPETITE FIDO!
Store in an airtight container - upto 2 weeks max
