Yes, onions and garlic are great things to keep on hand. I buy onions by the bag, I go through so many. A tip for cooking with them: the longer you keep onions and garlic around, the stronger they become, so less is more. If you're adding garlic and onions to something like pasta sauce, it may not be much of an issue, but strong garlic is definitely an issue if you're cooking mostly with herbs as with something like pesto.
