Reuben sandwich!
For lunch, I tried something new
I had seen online videos of people making these sandwiches, and I was keen to try it!
A Reuben sandwich originates from North American delicatessens (which is a shop that sells meats, cheeses and ready-made foods).
This sandwich is made with:
- Rye bread
- Sauerkraut
- Thousand Island dressing
- Swiss cheese
- Corned beef
In my food shop I aimed for these items as I really wanted to have a go at making it! For the Swiss cheese, I wasn't sure what to do really. So I just bought cheese of a Swiss origin (I used 'Le Gruyere').
the ingredients I used!
I also managed to get the majority of it all from Tesco! I was a bit nervous though as I had already been trying to eat sauerkraut and wasn't a big fan of it. I also got a 'garlic & herb butter' just out of curiosity.
Steps!
To start, I prepared my bread. I decided I would make two as one seemed a bit small as I wasn't having anything on the side.
Rye bread
The Rye bread was quite dense, not fluffy like normal bread - I guess it has less gluten? I hadn't had it before this so another thing I was nervous about (whether I would like it or not).
Next, I slathered the slices with a generous layer of thousand island dressing and cut some cheese on top, I think it would have been better with large slices.
sauce and cheese
Now was the time to put the sauerkraut and corned beef. I put the beef first and made sure to drain the sauerkraut of any liquid because I'm not a fan of soggy sandwiches.

Now I could put the slices on top and butter just the top part, for the grilling to come. I put a decent amount of butter as I didn't want to risk burning the pan.
Ready for grilling
I put the two sandwiches whole onto the preheated pan, then smacked a bit of butter for the top (which would be the side to be flipped onto). Honestly, the butter was really hard to spread at this awkward angle.
grilling
After about 3 minutes, I checked to see if I could flip it. It should've been more golden honestly but I was hungry and impatient. But I like that the garlic and herb butter gave it a nice touch on the visual part!
golden?
The final result!
finished!
A hard thing to take a photo of, but here's what it looks like! I like the layers it has but as I thought, the sauerkraut put me off it a bit. But it was nice anyways!
