Benefits of Carbohydrate Consumption - Part 1
Many people avoid the consumption of carbohydrates for fear of becoming obese and experiencing serious illness. Though the assumption is not entirely true. Potatoes, grains, beans are examples of healthy, high-carbohydrate foods. Not just energize, carbohydrates also have health benefits. As quoted in The Independent (30/12), this is another fact about carbohydrates.
Not causing direct obesity
Carbohydrates are often 'blamed' as a cause of obesity. This is related to the effects of carbohydrates that increase insulin and fat storage in the body. But not carbohydrates is the single cause of obesity but total calories of food consumed by someone.

This assumption is broken through several studies and real examples. Indigenous peoples in India, Thailand, and Taiwan, for example, live a high carbohydrate lifestyle during the 20th century. Yet they remain healthy and slim. Trying to lose weight without eating a single carbohydrate is not the right step. Some carbohydrate foods can actually help lose weight.
Humans eat carbohydrates since ancient times
Since ancient times, humans have been eating carbohydrates derived from vegetable roots, nuts, and seeds. Researchers found early humans ate the food long before the planting time. This is supported by genetic finds and archaeological evidence.
Gluten sensitivity affects a few people
Gluten is a protein found in wheat, barley, and other grains. Reducing carbohydrate intake also reduces gluten intake. Some people can not take gluten because of celiac disease and some other autoimmune diseases. Therefore, gluten-free products are now widely available in the market.
For people who do not have health problems related to gluten, then no need to avoid it. Gluten-free diets do not provide any additional health benefits.
Soluble fiber exists in foods high in carbohydrates
In addition to carbohydrates, potatoes, oats, and nuts contain soluble fiber that is good for heart health and weight management. Eating lots of fiber makes satiety last longer and significantly reduces appetite. This is good for those who want to lose weight.
Bowel bacteria need carbohydrates
Good bacteria in the intestine are needed to maintain a healthy body. In order for these bacteria to grow needed carbohydrates that make them can ferment to produce energy. Good bacteria also need nutrients from soluble fiber which again is contained in high carbohydrate foods such as beans and oats..
