How to make Shoyu Chicken
One of the many popular dishes of Hawaii is a dish called shoyu chicken. There are many different ways to make it, however I'm going to teach you the way I was taught . The juices of this dish is best served over a bed of white or brown rice and a side of macaroni salad. Shoyu is another word for soy sauce. By learning this simple dish, you can be sure anyone who eats it will be wanting more, and wanting to learn how to make it too.
Ingredients:
4 lbs chicken thighs with bone
2 14oz cans of chicken broth
1 stalk ginger sliced diagonally
3 cloves of garlic smashed
1 cup brown sugar
1 1/2 cup soy sauce
1/4 cup chopped green onions
6 tbsp cornstarch
Below is all the ingredients that you will need. My preference is aloha shoyu (soy sauce). Another popular brand to use is Kikoman soy sauce...
First add the chicken broth, ginger, garlic, brown sugar, shoyu, and chicken in a pot and boil on medium heat for 30 minutes and stir... Mix 6 tbsp cornstarch with 6 tbsp of cold water in a separate bowl and pour in pot. Turn heat to low and simmer for another 5- 10 minutes.
Last step is to pour the shoyu chicken over a bed of rice. Sprinkle some green onions over the rice and chicken and enjoy! All that's missing is a side of macaroni salad, :(
This dish tastes even better the next day in my opinion, probably cause the chicken marinates over night in the pot. Let me know if you try this recipe and how it turns out for you in the comments below...
