SLC S21 Week 3 [SUMMARY] || Managing Bleeding: The Basics of Controlling External and Internal Bleeding

Introduction

Week 3 of our Basic First Aid and First Response workshop has successfully concluded, and we are moving forward with a steady and well-structured pace. Our focus remains on ensuring participants learn critical, life-saving skills with the kind of depth and detail that medical personnel possess. This course is designed to equip students with the knowledge and practical expertise to handle emergencies confidently and effectively.

This week, our emphasis was on managing bleeding cases and addressing different types of trauma to the body. Participants were introduced to the classifications of bleeding, such as arterial, venous, and capillary bleeding. Each type was explained in detail, highlighting their distinct characteristics and the necessary steps to identify and manage them accurately. Understanding these distinctions is crucial for any first responder to assess the severity of an injury and act appropriately.

Additionally, the course covered the critical differences between external and internal bleeding. Theoretical and practical exercises were assigned to reinforce this knowledge. Students were encouraged to apply their learning through these assignments, which tested not only their understanding but also their ability to translate theory into practice. This integration of theory and practice remains one of the core pillars of our teaching philosophy, as medical and emergency response skills are inherently practical in nature.

We also discussed the step-by-step management of bleeding cases, tailored to the specific type of bleeding encountered. This included teaching participants how to apply bandages effectively and use a tourniquet in emergency situations. The application of these maneuvers requires precision and confidence, which is why we emphasized hands-on practice.

The primary goal was to ensure participants gained practical knowledge and could effectively communicate what they had learned. By doing so, we hoped to empower them to share this critical information with their family and friends, potentially saving lives in real-world emergencies.

This week, we had a total of six entries. I firmly believe in quality over quantity. Students often avoid courses with practical tasks, as such assignments demand more effort. However, those who choose these challenging tasks gain valuable, real-life, life-saving skills. These experiences not only enhance their knowledge but also prepare them for real-world scenarios, making their learning truly impactful.
