Deleting Patreon in the New Year
I'm writing this to inform everyone that I'll be deleting my Patreon account after the New Year. I want a platform that is explicitly free speech, which Patreon has said and has demonstrated that it is not.
Another reason why I believe the Steem platform will have a bright future. There has to be a way for creators to protect their work from the whims and feelings of moral busy bodies who think they know best for everyone.
Patreon bills itself as a creator platform, but I've come to realize that it is just a middleman, taking an extra fee on top of PayPal's for doing nothing particularly special. It's a middle man like Twitter and Facebook are merely middlemen for conversations and family photo albums. Middlemen have inserted themselves in between each other. Somehow, they to decide who says what to whom and how much is allowed to be said.
As far as I'm concerned, that is unacceptable.
It has revealed itself to be a platform that seeks to curate artists that fit a particular mold instead of allowing artists to define themselves in direct relation to their patrons. It is not the job of Patreon to protect patrons or the public from artist and commentator ideas or to "reform" them of their bad behavior.
Furthermore, their amorphous rules contained - and not contained - within their Terms of Service, makes maintaining a business that is dependent on their platform far too unreliable to trust long into the future.
For those reasons, I'll be seeking alternative methods of funding my filmmaking.

I sometimes think that in going for a "big picture" strategy by working toward development of tokens / growth of Steem ecosystem by DApps, Stinc has missed the true "big picture" opportunity. The real value proposition of Steem is now and always has been as a censorship resistant, decentralized social media network. That is more valuable now than ever. As Facebook, Patreon, Tumbler et al struggle to deal with the conflict between advertiser dollars and user desires, a platform that cuts out the advertiser model entirely is only going to become more attractive. This is the only area that Steem has a true first mover advantage, and even now years in, there isn't anyone else in this space.
Tokenization on the other hand is the cool kid on the block that dozens of blockchain solutions offer but that actually doesn't have any intrinsic value in and of itself. Tokens are worthless if they don't do anything.
Agreed. I think Steem Inc should be all over this free speech fight that's happening online, capitalize this trend and build the network as the antidote.
I built Steem.How as a way of bringing people on board while reorienting Steem's ethos a lot more towards liberty rather than monetary rewards. Let me know what you think.
This made me think (if there isn't one already): why isn't there an alternative on the Steem network? A subscription-based donation-like service through Steem? One assumption would be that it would require handing over your account to the service for a subscription to function each week, month, etc. but that isn't the case if it functions through topping up the wallet. Pretty interesting to think about.
I agree. While there is @fundition for donations, I don't think they do recurring donations. If they could incorporate that feature it would become yet another killer app on the Steem blockchain.
