Cinema Paradiso (1988) - Lets talk film / The good old days of cinema halls

in #film7 years ago (edited)

Do you all remember the good old day of cinema halls? The balcony seats, the curtains that rose before the show,  the people screaming and whistling whenever there is a good scene. Cinema halls was a place where people of all walks of life came together and enjoyed the film. Nowadays, the rise of multiplexes have lost the charm that cinema halls once had.

"Cinema Paradiso" is an Italian movie which will definitely make you cry remembering those great days a few of us had. It is a story of a successful film director Salvatore Di Vita, who will be remembering his childhood days in a small town of  Giancaldo, Sicily. The movie is about dreams that Salvatore had seen when he was a kid and his love for cinema. As a kid he was called Toto and would do anything to get inside the cinema hall and watch film. But, his mother being a widow couldn't afford the tickets and would beat Toto whenever he would waste money on the movies.

Young Toto is very mischievous, he would steal money from his mom and would spend it on movies. This would drive his mom crazy. But, Toto slowly develops a friendship with Alfredo, the projectionist. Alfredo will let Toto watch movie from his projection room.

The story is very simple, but the atmosphere the movie creates is really special. We see how Toto used to have a lot of fun in his small town, and his friendship with Alfredo is limitless. As Toto gets older he gets his hands on a camera and he starts shooting films and he starts editing it. He now knows what he wants to do with his life.

The movie will make you cry and also smile. This is really an incredible story and any 90s kid can relate to it. I really like the scene where the people watching the movie inside the cinema hall is shown. Like one lady is knitting her sweater, a man is smoking, a lady is trying to make her baby sleep, these are the things which makes me smile and also miss those days.
