I'm left thinking more about hate than I am about love. I adored the way they got more drunk as the light faded, and Carver captured drunken thought and word beautifully. Mel hates his wife every bit as much as the man she married before him, he just hurts her by telling stories about other loving couples instead of doing bodily harm. I could go on and on about this one. Such a simple story, but still packed.
I agree! He idolizes the old couple. Perhaps he realizes he can never have what they have, and he takes it out on his wife. Carver really captured that well!
