A Little Bit of a Distraction
And Now For Something Completely Different
No folks, this isn't a funny compilation of skit comedy, it is a distraction to beer virus rhetoric that is leaking from all orifices of the lamestream media. Everyone is in the same boat at this time, quarantined and the only highlights we have all day is finding something to cook or wait for 5 O'clock somewhere for the daily drinky-poo. If you have kids, they are probably sick of being cooped up in a house or being "grounded", but this time by our political officials. I do have a question for those kids who act out of frustration, how do you "ground" them? Take away their Xbox, send them to their room, not allowed to watch TV? I mean, this quarantine grounding is supposed to help us, but in essence, is doing damage to our kiddos.
Yesterday, I went to big Orange box store to look for gardening soil, and came across this woman who is trying to find something for her 10 year old to do. I told her than anything is better than learning the mandated Common Core math and majority of parents are taking teaching into their own hands, and taking the time to teach them how to "stack" numbers for adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing. These are the fundamentals to any math, yet our government wants to dumb down our youth. Did you know, if these kiddos keep learning Common Core math, with circles and boxes to get a number that could have taken 30 seconds using the "stack" method, opposed to 6 minutes to figure it out this way, that all kids will not have the connectivity to use a calculator in everyday situations? Each kid will have to say, wait, where's my paper to draw out boxes, to get this number, draw another box, column, etc, just before punching in a number on the keyboard calculator.
Again, fundamentals of learning. A quarantine project for household Moms and Dads to do is budgeting. I never really learned this when I was in high school, only balancing a checkbook was all I needed to do. Later in college, I took Finite Math for my journalism degree and the only thing I got out of that course, was how to amortize a house or car. This chapter was a flash in the pan, and you were not told about "points" when purchasing a home, condo, etc when dealing with lenders. I know, Mom and Dad this is boring stuff to them, but it benefits everyone, including parents. Budgeting is something I never did in my first marriage, spinning my wheels, not knowing really how much money I had leftover at the end of the month. I started learning how to budget at 38 years old, meeting my true love, who helped me get out of holes of debt. He helped me streamline the trail through the hairy forest, got me to a clearing. It was painful along the way, but like he says, "you gotta admit you're lost, before you find a way out".
We all feel a little lost, we distract ourselves from the negative on local media outlets to find something guilty on a streaming network. For example this Tiger King thing on red N. Please, not to be confused with Lion King, a Disney movie with James Earl Jones. Nope, these people have their own circus of crazy. Come on folks, it makes good TV for an instant, but does it make you feel like you are waiting for the folding chairs to appear over someone's head, while the audience yells in unison "Jerry, Jerry"? Let's all do ourselves a favor. Turn off the tele, and do something cultural. I am starting some agriculture myself, by planting a vegetable garden.
Let the distractions begin!!!
Tonight, have the kids make the meal. This time, they get to get a dart board, world map and darts, meanwhile teaching them how to throw. For each dart, best 2 out of 3 that hits the country, try that country's food. No darts, nor dart board? Have them close their eyes, spin them around once or twice, then let them stick their finger out, where it hits, you cook. Ya dig? I am sure you have something that would resemble something in your freezer or pantry that could help your kiddos create an awesome menu from a far away place. In addition to looking up the recipe, they can learn about the culture too. Have them break out the colorful markers and crayons and draw the flag of that place. Take it step further and find out names of boys and girls common for that area and for the evening, let your kiddo choose his or her name when learning about the food and culture. Heck, let them choose a name for Mom and Dad as well. Sounds fun, right?
Assignment for Mom and Dad: get your expenses out and start budgeting. Admitting that we are lost is the first step. If you are anything like me, my city is shutdown and trying to scrounge up the scraps of currency to pay bills. We will get through this together, but today, let's see where we are. Our road map to somewhere is out there, while we hold out in our quarantined quarters. What awaits us is paved way for a vacay from the beer virus madness. My ideal trip would be to visit the Kentucky Bourbon Trail to try the, wait for it... Bourbon.
A little bit of distraction is all we need in our lives for the moment.
Y'all take great care!
