The Man who knew too much.

It's Wednesday and that means it's movie night.

Movie night is always on the night before my dad leaves for his place in the North of Holland and it's always the same.

My dad, Bianca and I sit down and watch a film together and we rotate who gets to pick the movie.

My dad often tells a story about television when he was growing up.

His dad thought it was a device for sinners so they didn't have one at home but his friend had one (my dad was 8 at the time).

He tells the story of how he and his friend would sit on the couch at his friend's house while the father of his friend would rise from his chair with all the grandeur in the world to 'turn on' the television with a satisfying heavy click.

The father was the only person in the house allowed to touch the television.

It would then take about a minute for the television to 'warm-up' before a picture would appear in black and white.

And that was just to watch the news.

Fast forward a few years later....

Considering my dad still had no TV at home it meant for movies he had to rely on the cinema which he used to sneak into without his parents knowing when he saved a little bit of money.

But this one time in school (he must have been 12, maybe a little older not sure), they organized a 'movie night' of their own.

All the kids from the school went there and the movie they showed was 'The Man Who Knew Too Much (1956)'.

He said that you could hear a pin drop in school that night. It must have been something!

So, it was dad's time to pick a film tonight and he picked this film.

Now I've been trying for a while to find that film on any of the paid streaming sites but none of them have it or they are not available in this country and I simply refuse to buy a DVD.

I looked again tonight and as luck would have it someone has uploaded it to Youtube.

We watched it tonight.

What I like about old movies is the slower pace of the movie and the way the scenes are set up (especially the lighting).

I always feel like they took a bit more time back then to get it right.

It's not always awesome these old films (they can be boring as hell) but this movie was very nice with a good story!

Part of it plays in London too which I just got back from, that was cool.

But my dad loved it more than any of us!

It was nice to see him enjoy himself so much.

He's gone to bed now while I type this up with a nice glass of wine.

I guess I'm making memories of my own.

We have a couple of channels over in here that only play those old movies. It is really awesome to see them sometimes. This is probably a bit too much information, but I really love the musicals. @mrsbozz would probably kick me in the groin if she heard me say that :) Just kidding, she would never. It is awesome that you were able to find the movie and watch it with your dad!

Haha, some of the musical movies are great. The sound of Music is a classic.

Another great old flick to find is Sunset Boulevard. If you’ve never seen it, do yourself a favor and rectify the situation.

Just watched the trailer:

Thanks for the recommendation!

Movies are great. It's interesting watching older movies and getting the feeling of how different things were in the world at the time. With a nice home theater and the right company, even classical movies can be fun to watch. The older I get,the less I'm drawn to action movies. Comedies, psychological thrillers, and some science fiction films are my new favorites

I'm not sure what old is in your case :) I still enjoy a good action movie in my 30's. Lately been drawn to 80's action movies. A little less serious, yet fun.

I do enjoy slower movies a lot more then I was younger though. Which has opened up a whole new library of movies to explore from the past.
