From 1916-1918, China began to seed people to join WWI, but not officially. Until 1917, the Chinese government declared to join the war. However, they not sent troops to the war but given by about 140,000 northern farmers to alleviate the humanitarian crisis in Britain and France. It called the Chinese Labor Corps.

The France newspaper L’Excelsoir reported on August 22, 1916, as,"These Chinese labors are through the carefully selected from Chinese north area to France, they are more adept to our Climate than the south.” The selection of these Chinese labors is very strict. People with any eye diseases, tuberculosis, venereal diseases and dental diseases were rejected. Then they get some simple military trained and sent to France and Britain.

According to the original agreement, the Chinese laborers were based on the work of the army and don’t need to join the war, but in fact, the works of the Chinese laborers were always at the forefront.

Almost all the Chinese labors in Britain were put on the front lines, they were asked for digging trenches, building works, digging up bodies, clearing mines, building roads, and transporting grain and supplies. The need for war is almost everywhere and everywhere. Some Chinese labors were excavating bodies on the front lines to bury them in military cemeteries. Many Chinese laborers suffered mental stimulation and were confined to a specialized lunatic asylum. About 20,000 people died in the war, but most of them even not leave names.

After November 1918, WWI ended. France still needs thousands of workers, so some Chinese labors continue to work in factories, hospitals, and building sites. Some of the workers were sent to clear the battlefield and bury the bodies. All of the Chinese labors in Britain were sent back to China. The Chinese laborers who were wounded in the war were given a subsidy of 12 months wage for compensation, and they would never be taken care of again when they returned home.
