History Repeats Itself: The Million Dollars Website, Now On Top Of The Blockchain
Later edit: as @codewithcheese pointed out in the comments, the site is vulnerable to XSS attacks, so if you plan buying your pixel, my advice is to wait a bit.
Probably one of the most popular pages in the golden era of web was the 1,000,000 pixels page. Do you remember it?
Well, if you're too young to remember it, let me explain: you take an image, 1000x1000 pixels, you embed it on a web page and then you start selling pixels on it. Right. Pixels.
Believe it or not, there were people buying pixels back then, and some of them even found it cool to own a pixel of "history". Of course, nobody remembers those pages anymore.
Except somebody does. And not only they remember it, but they rewrote that kind of web page in such a way that it works without a server, directly off of the Etereum blockchain. It's called The Thousand Ether Homepage and, again, believe it or not, it already has some spots sold, as you can see in the screenshot above. If you have 0.001 ETH to spend (approximately 30 cents) then you can buy your very own pixel, thus making you part of the blockchain history.
Yay!
From the page description:
Ads displayed above are loaded directly from the Ethereum Blockchain. This Decentralized Application (DApp) does not have a traditional backend. No MVC framework, no SQL database. It's just a JavaScript application served statically from Github which speaks to the Ethereum blockchain using Web3.js. Pretty cool, right?
Since history repeats itself, I'm eagerly waiting for the "Am I Hot Or Not?" page rewritten on top of Dash. Or Monero.

Now that is a blast from the past! They say everyone eventually comes full circle but I'd never thought I would see this revisited, lol. Great find!!
This is really interesting stuff...thanks for sharing @dragosrua
Oh man, yea I remember this! Tisk tisk
Is it kind of like buying a star?
Probably :)
I think you might like this. Near the bottom is a lock icon and its actually a XSS, that loads a external Javascript file. Which does an alert and redirects to this status https://twitter.com/IAmMandatory/status/915439417665261568
Whoa, thanks for this :) I updated to post to include this warning.
I do remember the milliondollarhomepage.com.
Brilliant idea! If I'm not extremely wrong, I believe that in the end, it made the one million. Do you remember how long it took to load the 1 million pixels on the modems of those days? :)
@dragosroua,
Actually I have no idea about it friend!
Cheers~
Build op the BIG community, and then the witness sure follow !!!
