When I began my holistic journey I cut out all chemicals and toxins from my beauty and kitchen cupboard, but I struggled to replace my household and cleaning products with toxic-free alternatives.
Before I learned about the dangers of using these chemical-laden products my cleaning arsenal was filled with bleaches and other toxic products that were slowly making me tox-sick.
So I went on a mission, to rid my life AND home of all chemicals and live a completely natural and holistic lifestyle.
We all want a clean house, but wrongly believe that the stronger the products we use, the cleaner and safer our homes will be. Words like ‘disinfectant’ and ‘antibacterial’ are thrown around casually when really these products aren’t protecting us from illness — they’re making us sicker!
Although the effects of toxic cleaning products aren’t as obvious straightaway, they are slowly seeping into our system and before we can do anything about it, we become sick. We are exposed to toxic chemicals every day, which aren’t safe and are likely to be the cause of many cancers, asthma and allergies.
Next time you put a load of laundry on look at the ingredients of your detergent. Chances are there are a bunch of words in there you’ve never heard of, let alone are able to pronounce! Most detergents are full of phosphates and sulfates, which can lead to allergies and illnesses.

Cheap and effective sanitizing homemade cleaning products

I no longer use toxic cleaning products and always read the labels before I bring anything into my home. Another cheap and effective way I keep my home clean is with homemade cleaning products.
This DIY bathroom cleaner is 100% natural and toxin-free. It’s also super effective and leaves my bathroom looking and feeling fresh and clean. The addition of essential oils also means that it has a lovely, fresh scent. Tea tree oil, in particular, has natural antibacterial properties, making it a great natural disinfectant.

Who has time to make cleaning products?

Now you might be thinking: ‘Who has the time to make their own cleaning products?!’ but let me assure you, this DIY cleaner is so simple to make and will take a matter of minutes. And anyway, what’s more important, saving time, or saving your health?

It only takes a few minutes and you keep your and your family’s’ health safe!

All I ask is that you take five minutes out of your busy week to make this DIY cleaner and in the long run you will notice some really positive health changes.

A few considerations before you start:

Use distilled water if you want your cleaner to last longer than a week. Tap water is fine but will give your DIY cleaner a shorter shelf life. Whenever you add water without a preservative there is a risk of bacteria growing, so water-based products need to be used quickly.
You can also swap the essential oils to suit your scent preferences but tea tree oil has amazing antibacterial properties and can naturally disinfect your home, so I’d recommend leaving it in. You could even mix it with some warm water and use it around the rest of the house! Sweet orange essential oil also has antibacterial properties and will give your bathroom a fresh, citrusy scent.

Ingredients for this toxin-free DIY Natural Bathroom Cleaner:

2 cups of warm water (distilled water lasts longer than tap water)
1 or 2 tbsp of baking soda
50 ml of natural apple vinegar
2 tbsps of castile soap
60 drops of tea tree essential oil
60 drops of lemon essential oil
20 drops of thyme essential oil
20 drops of sweet orange essential oil
A larger amber glass spray bottle
