You can buy it through any means that supports ERC20, correct. You need to register your EOS tokens with your Ethereum address before the tokens are frozen in June 2018.
The tokens you are purchasing are just a "mirror" of the actual EOS tokens that will come later.
Buy tokens, store in Ethereum wallet, register Ethereum address with EOS network, store public/private EOS key, hodl.
