[English] THE BOOK THIEF (review)

in #entertainment7 years ago (edited)

Film based on the successful novel by Markus Zusak, a 2005 literary work that featured on the 105-week New York Times youth bestseller list, "The Book Thief" tells the story of a Jewish girl (Liesel) who Was adopted by a German working-class couple during the time of the Second World War.

When she goes to school for the first time, the teacher asks the girl to write her name on the board, and the children in the classroom started mocking when she realized that Liesel could not read or write because what she wrote on the board was a Short row of X (XXX) so her father taught her to read and that's how Liesel began her love of reading. Liesel engages in a strong friendship with a young man from his neighborhood named Rudy, his relationship with Rudy, his parents, the Jewish man hiding in the basement, and reading is what makes Liesel distract from the bombing.

Something that we can observe of this adaptation is that it is not the typical holocaust film like The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas; The Pianist or Life is Beautiful, it is a story that shows how the Führer affected not so much the Jews but the German population that was outside the concentration camp, which makes it more interesting.

The plot is very emotional, I would say a lot. They managed to make the audience be touched in practically all the scenes and I do not mean only sadness, sadness and more sadness as it usually is, but in different areas such as the tender and innocent love between Rudy and Liesel during the plot; He as the relationship of Liesel and his adoptive parents evolves in scenes in which Liesel demonstrates the love that is having them and vice versa; He as they forced the children to think like Nazis and also the friendship between the Jew hiding in the basement and Liesel. They knew how don't bore the audience at any time.

And as to forget that wonderful end, the best without doubt and I say it for the huge message that leaves. It was a very unpredictable ending, even when they reveal that the narrator of the story is the very death. They show that it is possible to build your whole life again; The how Liesel was able to continue after having the most traumatic moment of his life and moving on.

I think that as the last thing could highlight the excellent production, it was a high budget film and it shows. The actors did very well although I would have liked to see an attitude a little less introverted with respect to the protagonist, since in the book that you imagine. But it was very well done.
