Comparing episode of the Netflix Original series Black Mirror to steemit? Did I really just see this site play out in a show?

in #entertainment7 years ago (edited)

Let's jump in! so I'm watching a episode of #BlackMirror because shoot who doesn't love that show? LOL! I swear it was like watching a real life version of steemit. In season 3 Episode 1 it touches on the harsh realities of social media or the positive, either way the shit was crazy! Quick synopsis (#spoileralert) the main character in this episode is obsessed with getting her score up so she can buy things, but the kicker is she has to gain these votes and ratings from the people she interacts with. Sound a little familiar @steemit? When the show first starts Lacie is on a jog and passes by a group of joggers all with cellphones in hand... can I just stop and tell you how i actually thought nothing of this at first, until the ratings part lol... okay, back on track. Everybody jogging has a smile and seems to be extra "Happy" (this is where I insert "Happy" song by @pharell) c'mon I said we were gonna have some fun geez.petty pharell.jpg Still quite unsure as to what the whole ratings thing is about yet we go to her in her office after hopping off the elevator with who seems to be a rival or "fake friend" as we call them now and they both rate each other. a co-worker shortly pops up and offers Lacie a smoothie he bought for his co-workers because check this out... His happy score is down after a break up and he needs it to go back up. This is where I caught on that this score must be pretty important. Later on she receives a phone call to come see a house that she falls in love with, but is shut all the way down when the lady tells her she must have a 4.5 score to rent the home. Determined to now achieve this score to move out of the home she currently shares with her brother who is a bit raunchy and has a lower score. Watch out folks, Lacie on the move with a bit of pep in her step and a big smile on her face (because she needs this to boost that score) she is ready to achieve her 4.5. Fast forward and she has been invited by a old friend to be apart of her wedding as the maid of honor. She has major problems at the airport when her flight is canceled and she realizes she may not make the wedding which will drop her score down and she wont be able to do or afford anything. After asking the airline if they had another flight she freaks out on the lady because she tells her there is another flight, but she cant afford the ticket because it requires a minimum of a 4.2 and in the cab there and on the street she had some bad encounters and was voted down. Now, we are at the end.... Yes, I jumped a whole 30 min. but we still have a lot of ground to cover. Lacie is now in jail for the hilarious show she put on during her speech at the wedding. duh... she made it, but she looked like crap after going through hell and back to get there. Hair was a hot mess. Her dress ripped and covered in mud. She meets a fellow inmate and they start going at it calling each other names like school age kids because upon entering the jail u lose your ability to vote or be voted on. It ends with her sitting back down to realize she loves this version of herself better and she is comfortable. She is in the worst situation possible and yet has so much joy out of being able to just speaking her mind and be herself. This is the moment I realized it's not just about the @upvotes.

Okay, I know your probably thinking damnnn girl all that had nothing to do with how it compares with #steemit. Oh, but I promise you it definitely does. So here on steemit some of us are in it for the money and some of us are in it because we simply love people and like sharing our worlds as well as seeing a portion of others. Thus some of us posting for upvotes simply to make money and add to where they fall in the social status column and then there are those of us who post because we genuinely are fuckin awesome people with the ability to get the word out on how to make it in this awesome ass thing called #Life! clears throat whew, excuse me... If that wasn't a little rant about myself. haha!!!!!

So what I concluded was this, it has many comparisons because we post on here and some people really have the juice and make it big. They score high by us the people upvoting them and eventually they are deemed popular and can make good money to do just about anything with. ah ah you see where Im going with this. LOL! The grass ain't always green though and every now and then you get a person who post and people can't take the realness (Am I right @elpompador?) lowering their score and not allowing the person to make money the same way to keep up with life in the fast lane. NAILED IT! now, gimme them upvotes... lol! Sike no, but really this is no different. Some of us will make it big and some not so much, but the important thing is never to lose yourself for a few votes. People who actually like you generally like the realest version of you and there is a follower base for every type of #steemian. Eventually people will #follow and you will be where you fit in on the social scale and just maybe you'll feel better and be most comfortable there.

Ooooorrrrr you could say yea right I'm tryna " Get Money" #lilkim style and go for the votes until you have adapted a whole new alter ego. LOL!
whelp guys that's my time... besos

Once the mobile industry and Crypto sync up, this is high key a real life scenario. Lol. Don't let Mark Zuckerburg get a blockchain.

Honestly, I think Steem actually makes this view of social media outdated. People are more likely to do things for money than they are for "likes" or "social acceptance". The only thing you can get on most social media sites now is "social acceptance" or "street cred". Even Facebook hasn't found a reliable way to bring actual value to its users. People are more likely to flock to steem just because of the money aspect of it. People are currently working so many crappy jobs/ doing any number of unsavory/ illegal things to get money. You don't really see that many people desperate to do these types of things just for likes. The survival instinct that Steem taps into is much more powerful and universal than surface level narcissism that most other social media strokes.
