To hold up has two meanings: 1) delaying something or 2) robbing something.
A bank branch being held up: Example: This girl is being held up by something or someone.
Example sentences:
Two masked gunmen held up the local bank branch.
Mr. Smith would always hold up the meetings with his off-topic rants. Listening to them was a waste of time.
